SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — In week six of tracking grocery prices, Jim Spiewak stopped at Smiths to compare the cost of basic food essentials.
Each Monday, he buys the same four items, milk, eggs, bread, and beef, to see how prices stack up week to week and store to store.
During the week of 1/5/26, milk cost $1.44 per gallon, which was on sale because of a shorter expiration.

Wonder Bread went up in price from $3.24 per loaf to $3.69, and we’ll keep track of whether this higher price is here to stay.
A dozen eggs came in at $2.09.
Beef was once again the most expensive item. Ground beef was priced around $5 per pound, which is down from the previous trip to WinCo at about $7 per pound, and a New York strip totaled $4.48 for 0.65 pounds.
After tax, the four items came to $22.34, near the lower end of the price range so far in the series. That total is higher than the $20.50 spent a few weeks ago at Trader Joe’s and less than the $25.14 spent at Harmons during the week of 12/8/25.
We’ll see if bread prices stay higher across other stores and across weeks, but the biggest swings are still tied to whether beef is on sale.
The takeaway is simple: watch for meat deals and don’t ignore in-app coupons. When beef is discounted, total grocery costs drop fast.
