Weather for the holiday in Atlanta
The National Weather Service forecasts a sunny Thanksgiving in Atlanta with a high of 52 and a low of 33, which would be cooler than normal for the holiday.
The normal low is 40 and the normal high is 58 on Thanksgiving in Atlanta, according to NWS. The coldest Atlanta Thanksgiving was 21 degrees (set in 1911), and the hottest on record was 76 degrees (set in 1908 and 2016).
Snowfall on Thanksgiving in Atlanta is very rare — the most recorded was just trace amounts in 1936 and 1938.
Busy travel expected in Georgia
AAA released a report Tuesday estimating that 2.3 million Georgians will travel at least 50 miles from home during the period from Tuesday, November 25, to Monday, December 1. The numbers represent a new record for Thanksgiving travel in the state, with a 1.4% increase compared to last year.
Over 2.1 million Georgia residents will be traveling by car, over 152,000 residents will fly, and about 46,000 will use other modes such as bus, train or cruise.
“Georgians are gearing up for the season with robust travel plans. Whether it’s cruising up to the mountains or flying across the country, folks are prioritizing time with loved ones,” said Garrett Townsend, director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group, in the report.
“Even with concerns about flight delays, travelers are showing remarkable flexibility and resilience; some may choose to hit the road to make those holiday connections happen.”
The FAA on Sunday also announced that Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was among 40 airports nationwide that had their restrictions on commercial flights lifted following the end of the government shutdown, lowering the possibility of delays for sky travelers.
