North Carolina eggs settlement: All three million delivered to food banks

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — All three million eggs won by North Carolina as part of a settlement with three major producers have been delivered to food banks in the state, the attorney general’s office said Tuesday.

Cal-Maine Foods, Hickman’s Family Farms, and Versova agreed to deliver the eggs to the food banks in July to resolve allegations of violating antitrust laws by manipulating information that helps set egg prices in the country, according to the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office.

The first drop off was held on Aug. 18 at Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh, which received 270,000 eggs, according to the attorney general’s office.

The attorney general’s office said the final batch of nearly 150,000 eggs were delivered to MANNA FoodBank in Henderson County.

As noted by the attorney general’s office, the final delivery will support western North Carolina after it was devastated by Hurricane Helene in 2024.

“Nearly two years after Hurricane Helene, communities across western North Carolina are still rebuilding,” North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson said in a statement. “I’m glad these millions of eggs have gone to our neighbors in western North Carolina and throughout the state who need it most.

“This is also a warning to companies that try to game the system to make a profit,” Jackson continued in his statement. “We won’t let you.”

MANNA FoodBank CEO Claire Neal said in a statement, “Eggs are a great source of fresh protein and one of the most requested items from our neighbors. We appreciate the work of Attorney General Jeff Jackson and his office to reach a settlement with egg producers that included the donation of eggs to MANNA and other North Carolina food banks. These eggs will greatly benefit our food insecure neighbors at a time of growing need.”
