This July 4th is an Independence Day like no other.

Known as a semiquincentennial, Saturday, July 4th marks 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. While a typical July 4th is marked with cookouts and fireworks, this one has included months of concerts, exhibits, parades and special events.

The day July 4th falls – it’s a Saturday – has also created a three-day weekend for many people with some places closed on Friday, Jan. 3. Because the official holiday falls on a Saturday, federal offices, along with many state and local ones, are closed on the closest weekday of July 3.

Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed for the July 4, 2026 holiday:

Federal offices

Federal offices will be closed July 3 and July 4.

U.S. Post Office

U.S. Post Office is open July 3 and closed July 4. There will be no mail delivery on July 4th.

Banks

Most banks are open on July 3 and closed on July 4th. Check with your local branch to make sure.

Financial markets

Financial markets are closed Friday, July 3. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed that day, along with Saturday, July 4.

Retail stores

Walmart is open regular hours on July 3 and July 4th. Target, Best, Buy, Kohl’s and other retailers, as well as CVS and Walgreens, are also open regular hours, but check ahead as some services, such as pharmacies, may have different hours.

One exception to the holiday closure schedule is Costco. Costco is open Friday, July 3rd but closed Saturday, July 4th.
