KENNETT SQUARE, PA – A new piece of public art is becoming part of the Kennett Square landscape as Opus Restaurant prepares to celebrate a mural honoring the community’s history and creative spirit.

On Monday, October 26, at 4 p.m., Opus, the recently opened restaurant concept from Square Roots Collective, will host a mural dedication featuring Philadelphia-based artist Phillip Adams. The artwork, located on the restaurant’s exterior facade, draws inspiration from Kennett Square’s character and the industrial heritage of Birch Street.

Opened in September, Opus brings together culinary exploration and artistic expression, creating a dining experience that extends beyond the restaurant’s menu. The new mural builds on that vision by connecting the building’s exterior to the surrounding neighborhood.

Adams, whose work frequently explores the relationship between industrial structures and natural environments, has incorporated those themes into the mural. The artwork reflects both the history of Birch Street and the community’s evolving identity.

The dedication will bring together Adams, local community members, and representatives from Square Roots Collective, including Co-CEO Stephanie Almanza and Managing Director of Hospitality Michael DePaolo.

The mural is also part of a broader effort to enhance the Birch Street corridor through public art and streetscape improvements.

Square Roots Collective has been leading a series of initiatives designed to strengthen connections between Kennett Square’s built environment, natural spaces, and community gathering places.

Among those efforts is Art on the Greenway, an initiative concluding its second year of programming. Also led by Adams, the project is marking the occasion with the installation of a new temporary sculpture inspired by the American sycamore tree at the Kennett Greenway trailhead on Birch Street.

Together, the mural and sculpture highlight the role public art can play in connecting the area’s industrial past with its natural surroundings and ongoing development.

For Opus, the dedication provides an opportunity to introduce another dimension of its identity as a destination where food, art, and community intersect.

The event also invites residents to experience a new addition to Kennett Square’s growing collection of public art while recognizing the partnerships helping shape the future of Birch Street.

With the mural becoming part of the restaurant’s exterior, visitors and residents will be able to enjoy the artwork beyond the dedication, adding another visual landmark to the neighborhood.
