Oklahoma nonprofit honored with national award for food sovereignty campaign
The Bigger Than Food Foundation, led by Apollo Woods, received a Pulse Award in Houston for its Growing for Good campaign, which focuses on empowering underserved communities through food sovereignty.
The Bigger Than Food Foundation, an Oklahoma nonprofit, has been recognized with a Pulse Award in Houston for its Growing for Good campaign, which promotes food sovereignty and supports underserved communities.
“It’s the first one in the category for nonprofits for a strategic campaign,” said Apollo Woods, founder of the Bigger Than Food Foundation. “But to be recognized by a national organization in Texas for what we are doing here in Oklahoma, I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, but it’s definitely an honor.”
For the past eight years, Woods and the foundation have worked to spotlight underserved communities, creating opportunities and pushing toward food sovereignty. The initiative goes beyond providing food, allowing people to decide what food they want.
“It’s not so much about how much you grow, but what you grow,” Woods said.

Woods runs a 13-acre farm in Spencer called the Growing for Good Farm. The farm also serves as a hands-on learning space for students from local schools, including Spencer High School, Rogers Middle School, Capitol Hill High School and Skyline Middle School.
“During harvest season, they will be able to take food home from what they grow on the farm,” Woods said.
