What is the purpose of this part of a meat grinder?

    It’s usually to keep it from becoming a hand grinder, although the placement seems a little off in this picture

    Slicing meat into long rectangles to put through the hole, usually with half thawed meat. It’s a safety measure so your hand doesn’t got down into the hole to push meat. I’ve usually seen it on much larger meat grinders with a large mixer underneath. I make gyros meat for a Greek place once a week, as a second job. 160 lbs of beef and 40-50 lbs of lamb. Then form into balls to stack on a spike to get shaved and formed into cones to freeze

    I know people already said this but it’s definitely a guard just pictured in the incorrect location. Should be over the shoot.

    Some grinders come with this piece welded on. I have had both types, the detachable plastic and welded metal.
