Trying to do my research in the subreddit search but there’s too much info!

I just want to know where I can get the tastiest bone in kbbq shortribs that are cut thinly sliced (I believe the dish is called ‘LA galbi’), not galbi ggim style

Thank you!

Most good restaurants will make a great version of this,

but some that come to mind are –

BCD Tofu, Mapo Kkak Doo Gee,

Hodori’s is really good too, iirc.

If you are looking to grill them at home yourself most Korean grocery stores should sell them pre-marinated which you could buy by the lb. I recommend Arirang market’s marinated version but they are in OC not LA.

  3. lowkey buying pre-marinated LA galbi from a korean market and just baking them, maybe hitting broil at the end, slaps pretty hard. especially because it’s pretty pricey at restaurants

I would the best restaurant for this is Soowon Galbi, high end kbbq place. Next would be Soot Bull Jeep.

Go to Choice Meat Market on 3rd and Western or on Olympic across the street from Hannam Chain market. Same name, different operators, but both excellent Korean butchers.

LA galbi is easier to eat and grill but I do prefer the normal butterfly cut. You can go to the little butcher Park’s BBQ runs next to their restaurant for that.

I feel like a sleeper hit is jeonju hyundaiok. https://maps.app.goo.gl/Awa45fbejxdPR6iMA

They’re known for their regional bean sprout with octopus hangover soup (which is delicious, but not quite mainstream), but their plated galbi absolutely crushes last time I got it.

They used to be in a location where they had portable charcoal grills to cook it at your table but the hot plate galbi is just as good.

There’s a new spot called LA tofu house on Vermont that I think is better than bcd, you should check it out. In my opinion it should be on the LA times 101 list

The unmarinated version is better in my opinion!

Honestly I think DIY is the way to go for galbi. The Costco in Burbank and the ones in the SGV sell it, you can go to HMart and get the marinade for it, make sure it’s got the Korean pear in it. It’s better than I usually get at restaurants and like half the price (well, same price but you get twice as much because Costco!). If you want to pay someone to grill it for you, BCD always does a fair job.

Galbi is my favorite! Yum I can never get enough!

  11. If it’s in the name, that’s the restaurant’s specialty, so my vote is Chosun Galbee.

a cut above butcher in santa monica usually has marinated galbi you can make at home that’s pretty bomb

Kang ho dong bbq but I don’t think it’s that specific cut if you’re looking for it that cut Surawon tofu house is very good. Thicker than the average restaurants and flavorful
