This shockingly-delicious apple crisp comes from The Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook that was published in 1950. The dessert bares little resemblance to modern crisps made with brown sugar and rolled oats. Please give it a try and then report back. Ingredients are listed below — watch the video for instructions:

Apple Crisp
Ingredients for a 10x6x2-inch baking dish
4 cups sliced apples (approx. 4 large apples; I used ‘Gala’ here)
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 cup sifted flour (I did not sift my flour)
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter
Bake at 350ยฐF until the top browns and crisps — about 40 minutes

  1. This wonderful apple crisp makes me so hungry to make this. I dearly love apples and I love them baked and/or cooked, as well. Thank you for sharing this recipe and making this video! Take care and be safe! ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ˜‹โค๐ŸŽโค๐ŸŽโค๐ŸŽโคโ˜บ๐Ÿ‘
PS: Thank you for sharing the story about your first piano lesson and smelling apples baking in your teacher's home. I am glad you felt calm and relaxed. Obviously, Ms. Bernice Conrad did a great job of teaching you how to play, because you are a WONDERFUL PIANIST!! You are endlessly amazing! Bravo and thank you!
Much love to you and Mr. Fox!! ๐Ÿคฉโค๐ŸŽน

  2. kevin lee, i have made this almost every week!!! i made 6 for xmas for relatives and 2 for me, EVERYONE LOVES THIS RECIPE!!! but i did change it up, cider not water, dark brown sugar & added walnuts and a smile.

  3. It's serendipity. In the past week, I've made two failed recipes of apple crisp. Then I thought, "I'll ask Betty Crocker." My cook book is also from the 1950's, and I only yesterday looked up this same recipe. I couldn't make it as I've used all my apples. Now here you aare, showing me the ropes. And I didn't search for this on your vlog. It came up in my feed tonight. Amazing. Thank you, Kevin. I'll let you know how mine turns out. Snow tomorrow, so it might be a few days. Oh, and I'm reading Provence 1970, as per your recommendation. Love it. Not loving Richard Olney, however.

  4. I'm with you on this apple and cinnamon thing. I'm the same way in the fall. I want my apple crisp! Sometimes in the winter I make plain old baked apples. I have to watch the sugar so I make mine stuffed with dried fruit, nuts and a drizzle of honey, and of course cinnamon and maybe some cloves. Plain whipped cream on the side. They get the job done, even though not so much sugar. Once in awhile I splash some brandy on them. I wonder if they started adding oatmeal and brown sugar to apple crisp in the sixties, because they thought it was healthier? ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ

  5. Kevin I saw the Cool Whip and I about died ! I have a bag of apples in the "ice BoX" that are calling Apple Crisp to me can't wait to try this. by the way my piano teacher was SIster Ann Therese bless her ! what a gift those piano lessons were ! that and cooking class at the Girls Club with Mrs. "K" (too many letters to pronounce her Lithuanian name)

  6. I actually LOVE that fat free Cool Whip…they have also improved the (canned) Reddi Whip no fat whipped cream – It's EXCELLENT on apple crisp, brownies, etc. Your recipe looks DELICIOUS!

  7. Wow, I have this cookbook. My mom's. She's written at the side too much salt. This is my favorite apple crisp, whatever you had as a child is your favorite, right?

  9. I think this would be called apple crumble in the UK prefer it with granulated white than brown sugar. Love your channel Kevin.

  10. I would love to hear you play something on the piano. That apple dish looks delicious

  11. Hi Kevin, this looks awesome. Love Betty Crocker Cook books also. But you probably know what i know, so i was really surprised when i heard about it and Betty Crocker History. Thank you for sharing the recipe and talking about your piano Teacher. I would love to see you play on a video. my teacher also was awesome lady. Sadly i didn't keep up with those lessons. God Bless Kevin and Mr. Fox.

  12. Love this recipe. I agree, cinnamon & apples together are so comforting and delicious. Thanks for sharing the special memory of your first piano lesson.

  13. Hi kevin, I have just made this recipe for the first time this evening, following along with your video. Am eating a little bowl of it now and it's a revelation
A cripsy, light bit of appley cinnamon heaven.

Like you, I didnt sift the flour, but it's still so airy & CRISP! I raised my eyebrows at the amount of salt, but it seems to have worked magic with the suagr, spice & water.

I loved the story about your first piano lesson ๐Ÿค—, and I really laughed about Mr Fox and the ice-cream: "I know, I know"! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
