I made a big batch of kimchi (it is wayyy better than my native sourkraut!), but there is a white layer on top, as well as some white spots. it is a bit slimy. smell is nice. is it a kahm yeast? can I discard the top layer and eat the rest or is it unsafe to consume?

Looks like. Some sort of fungus. Make sure next time that the kimchi is submerged in the juices.

I would say this is not safe to eat even if you remove the top layer it’s likely the entire batch went bad
