It’s as if she was in a desperate attempt to bake a pie while simultaneously attempting to solve a complex mathematical equation.

Water pie. Depression era cooking. It’s also called depression pie. It’s about giving your family a tasty sweet treat when times are extremely tough.
I have had these pies, and they taste surprisingly good. Impressed by the ingenuity of folks when they had such little resources. I actually really appreciate that she made it in a way that appears to be somewhat true to the original recipe, rather than the modern trend of making similar pies out of coke/sprite/wine that just don’t work as well.
Not stupid food. Odd product born from dire circumstances, and interesting part of history. Is it going to be anyones favourite dish? I doubt it. Will it surprise you with how good it tastes? Probably!

You want some pie with that butter?
Edit: I got down voted for a small joke? Reddit is full of some sensitive assholes.

News Alert: sugar and butter taste good when cooked together.
We’ll have more on this story as it unfolds. Stay tuned.

Save yourself 50 minutes and just throw cinnamon/sugar on butter toast if you’re poor

What is even the point to doing something like this?
If only there was a place you could exchange those cotton pieces of paper that you have for pies that are already made and will definitely taste better than whatever monstrosity this was!
Alas, such a place must be a fantasy.

Doesn’t seem like a bad pie. I’m into it.

Basically sugar pie with water instead of cream or milk. I love sugar pie
Blushing_Carnation
The haphazard splash of vanilla extract definitely terrified me (that stuff is strong) but otherwise an innovative take on the spirit of a water pie (working with what you’ve got). Never had one personally but it looks tasty!
SnooCapers938
My only real problem with this is why not mix the filling in a bowl or a jug and then pour into the pastry case?
ok_okay_I_get_that
Someone is going to be getting a very strong hit of vanilla. I think not mixing the vanilla to a slightly even concentration may be the worst part.

Essentially the filling is like simple syrup and butter

To me it looks like she’s pouring the water on top of a pumpkin pie. Am I seeing things incorrectly? Is she actually just pouring it on top of a pie crust? What is going on here?

Water pies are actually pretty good.

Real recipe, could actually be called common place because of it’s popularity in the depression, and people still make fancier versions to this day. Not stupid, you are just uninformed.
