Broken Spoke, Kerby Lane, and Walburg are the only ones I know that are still kicking

I love how Sugar’s was innocently in this list. I can definitely imagine coming in from out of town, having this in print, not having mobile internet (because 1997), and trying to take the family to Sugar’s for dessert.

I remember going to that UR Cooks for my 12th birthday at 183/Burnet. I thought it was so cool, but now I can’t believe my mom took us to a place where we paid to cook our own food. Probably why we never went back.

So much brain cell carnage at Cain and Abel’s. One summer in the mid ’80s all the campus bars started competing with each other by offering 2 for 1, 3 for 1, all the way up to 7 for 1 at Abel’s at one point. You’d order one drink and get a tray with seven drinks. Finally the city council outlawed that practice

For some reason we all got gift certificates to Old San Francisco Steakhouse as part of our Project Graduation schwag bag. What a bizarre little chain.

  8. U R Cooks! Where you could grill your own meat!

Vinny’s on Barton Springs! Oh my gosh, I had some fun visits there many years ago but I couldn’t remember the name of that place.

Dan McKlusky’s was one of the first “fancy” restaurants I ever went to. Both locations

I really miss The Olde San Francisco Steak House!!

  14. This is a great list to point at when people complain about food here. It really puts on display how young the city is vs essentially all other major cities.
