It’s gift-giving time of year, and those cheap, generic hot sauce sets are popping up everywhere. But resist the urge to buy those because they come from places like China or other overseas producers of cheap products. That’s not to say that because something comes from another country it is bad, but these come from countries that are just cranking out bargain-priced sets that are not really what they appear to be.

Often these will have names like “Sauces of the World” or “Restaurant Hot Sauce Sampler” or “Food Truck Hot Sauces” or that sort of thing. But these are usually all vinegar-based sauces with only slight variances in the ingredients from bottle to bottle and the only true difference may be food coloring. Read closely and you will see wording like “inspired by” hot sauces from around the world or famous restaurants for food trucks or similar verbiage. These are usually not branded sauces coming from a known establishment.

They might be good as a gag gift for a White Elephant Party or something like that, and it is not necessarily that the hot sauces are bad, it’s just that they mostly taste like very basic vinegar-based sauces. These are not for people who truly appreciate spicy foods, and it is best to avoid them while instead seeking out a set from a place that is known for making good hot sauce.

You can find sets from known brands like Tabasco, Yellowbird, Dave’s, Melinda’s, Secret Aardvark, and more, or you can put together your own. Just get the sauces from companies that you know produce quality products or seek out some craft sauce makers for a really good set. And be sure to avoid the generic collections that may be tempting because they are cheap, but that are not worth the money.

Once in a while those generic hot sauce gift packs have a sauce in them that’s exceptionally good. The problem is it can never be found again, especially not on its own in a larger sized bottle.

Agreed. I’d rather receive one really good sauce than 20 generic bland ones.

I respectfully disagree. I love any hot sauce they throw at me.

I wish there were sets like this from the established brands. I like hot sauces but it takes me a while to get through a “large” bottle and I don’t like having my fridge stuffed with open bottles of sauce.

I don’t mind them. I wish I knew this means that I don’t truly appreciate spicy foods.

Now more than ever with the dollar bin – perfect stocking stuffers.

There are like 10 private label hot sauce manufacturers in the US, and they make the *majority* of your hot sauces, even a lot of the big label brands. Yellow Bird and Melinda’s are made by Gaffney I Believe, who also make a bunch of these. These aren’t really any different in quality or consistency, they’re just less popular recipes that are recycled. Some of them are actually pretty good.

I’m off the sauce…. But onto flakes now. Flatiron pepper company has me fucking hooked

  11. My wife likes to give me these, she also complains that I have too many hot sauces…. I can’t win. I appreciate the thought, but these just aren’t very good. The last set I got was made in China
