Is there supposed to be such a large an air gap between this butter dish its cover?
I know it can’t form an airtight seal because it’s ceramic on ceramic, but I don’t want dust or random flies to get into that gap either.

Is it possible the base is upside down?
dirty-Hakka
no, it’s because you can’t measure it in butter.

No, there shouldn’t be a gap. The whole point of the thing is to keep out bacteria and odors. Although, if you don’t use it for storage but just occasionally then it doesn’t matter.

It’s poor quality. It should properly close in order to keep light and excess air out since the fat in butter goes rancid from being exposed to light, air and heat. Get a new under dish or scrap it. Quality items make a difference and even if they cost a little more up front, they save you money and time down the road. Happy buttering buns n’stuff.

You need a new butter dish. This one is junk

If you bought it at a resale shop, it’s quite likely that the top and the bottom are NOT really part of a set, but just a random top and bottom that don’t actually fit.

Sure it’s not upside down? Somebody else suggested this, and it definitely looks as if that’s your answer.

This butter dish isn’t made very well, and is probably only made with the thought of *presentation* rather than storage.
If you want to use a butter dish for unrefrigerated butter storage, look into a butter bell.

Don’t worry about it. You’re fine. Butter doesn’t go rancid anywhere near as fast as you will use a stick up.
