Made cookies first, and ended up cremating it. Made cake, sank like the titanic.
Never baking again.

Could be a bad oven temp on some of the crispy things. We all start from the same spot and I’ve burned plenty of things. Burned a bunch of pecans this week because I read 325 as 425, and ruined like 3lbs of pecans.

If at first you don’t succeed, quit and never try again…… is that how that goes? I mean if you didn’t set off the fire alarm did you really even “fail”?

You need to remember that baking is a lot more unforgiving at times, and when you go into it careless and guessing everything, then it’ll end in disaster. Look up some baking videos and learn a few basic tips. Get to know your oven better if the first batch of cookies burns, then lower the temperature a few. Overall, look up the proper techniques, and you’ll be fine

Wow that looks terrible! But it’s OK, ugly cakes make wicked good trifle. Keep going, practice makes perfect. I can’t count the number of hideous baking disasters I’ve made. You got this!

it happens, man. you’ll probably do better next time.

Don’t give up on your first attempt! Baking is like playing an instrument. You suck at first but you’ll be Bethoven soon enough.

Like all things, it just takes practice and more practice. Learn from your mistakes, follow the recipe, and get to know your oven. Also, YouTube baking tips and such. You’re gonna do better the next time!

Keep trying. Don’t give up. Baking is a science and once you build a good foundation, you can experiment a little.

Baking is a skill you can get better at! The first time I ever made anything solo it was completely inedible and I nearly had to call the fire department. People here are really good at identifying issues with recipes and temperatures and user error if you want to try again with some new guidelines on how to get a better result. Congratulations on trying something new, and please consider trying again one day.

I’m not sure how you went about it but if it’s anything like the people on the show “Nailed It” where they decide to wing things and ignore the recipe then I can see how you went wrong. Baking is very precise, unlike cooking. But if you stuck to the recipe then it could be something else, oven might not be calibrated right, expired ingredients, etc.
Make sure your baking soda and baking powder haven’t expired, maybe that’s what caused your cake to sink. And if you opened the oven too many times to check on it then that can also cause sinkage.
Please don’t give up! There’s so many resources online that can help. 🙂

What did you do/add differently than what was actually written down as the recipe?

Don’t be discouraged. Even the best baker burns a batch once in a while. What was your recipe? If it’s a generic recipe, try experimenting with the oven temp and time. Try 350 for 12 minutes. Take them out when the edges of the cookies are golden brown and crisp. Don’t worry about the soft tops, they will firm up as they cool. Try three cookies at a time on different temps to see what works best.

Next time, try following the recipe 😬

Never made a vanilla sponge cake so no advice there. The cookies is see not all of them are carbon. They might be a little more tan than I’d prefer but it looks like you have a solid start. The cookies look like they kept their form and look to have a good number of delights each. I would think time was your issue. I start camping in front of the oven at about 1/2 time with a new recipe. Because ovens flux and sometimes recipes lie (my sugar cookies state 10 minutes, they are perfect in 4).

Were you following a recipe or just throwing stuff together, hoping for the best? Lmao

I’d also argue that if you’re using recipes from YouTube, especially places like 5 minute crafts, don’t trust the recipes ever. The recipes there are often fake. You’re better off following the recipes in a cookbook or major site.
