Vegan and vegetarian food in Egypt is it easy to find and what are your options I’ve been living in Egypt for over 2 years and today I’m going to be showing you all the amazing vegan and vegetarian food that Egypt has to offer mlea is a

Famous soup that is about as Egyptian as it gets fa is actually a dish that hails back to the times of the ancient Egyptians Yeah I’ve actually made more detailed videos about most of the dishes I’m going to be briefly mentioning in this video so if you’re curious to see a more in-depth look into those dishes Desserts and Drinks check the description of this video for the links to those other videos with that being said y let’s

Begin the tour the first dish I’m going to be showing you today is f f f is actually a dish that hails back to the times of the ancient Egyptians when it used to be left as an offering to the Gods in temples fa is a flaky pastry

With many thin layers of dough and ghee there is a wide variety of f ranging from sweet to Savory and vegetarian to non-vegetarian the most classic fa and the one that dates back to ancient Egypt is fa melet then known as f matud a simple faer soaked in or served with

Honey or molasses other vegetarian fillings include cheese malban and Nutella the second dish I’m going to be showing you today is the famous kosheri kosheri is a classic Egyptian meal and a national dish of Egypt kosheri consists of pasta lentil beans rice chick peas and is topped with fried onions a tomato

Sauce is then poured over this mixture and is served with the site of chili oil and garlic sauce it is a cheap and filling meal and a favorite of any carb lover next up we have faafo or as it is known in Egypt Tamia in most Middle Eastern countries Falafel is made with

Mashed chickpeas but in Egypt it is made with fava beans making it a lighter more moist version of its chicke Falafel cousin there are also more herbs mixed in with the beans giving it a green green color the mashed beans spices and herbs are formed into small balls or

Patties and then fried these delicious little fritters are usually eaten for breakfast in Egypt and are served by themselves or put into a sandwich often with the hen sauce and some vegetables one of my favorite things to eat in Egypt is mashi mashi is a very well-loved dish by all Egyptians and it

Is even said that if a woman can cook a good mashi then he can cook anything so what is masi masi is rice stuffed vegetables the rice is cooked in a tomato sauce with delicious spices like Dill Mint or cilantro and stuffed into a variety of different vegetables such as

Eggplant peppers and zucchini or wrapped in cabbage leaves or grape vine leaves while mashi or dolma in other countries May sometimes have meat mixed in with the rice mashi in Egypt rarely has meat in it and in fact in the two years I have been living here I have never seen meat in

Mashi however mashi many times is cooked in a chicken broth and although it is possible to be cooked in a veggie broth it may be difficult to make this request clear at restaurants so be aware of this factor a staple of the Egyptian diet eaten for breakfast and considered

Another national dish of Egypt fool is next on the list of vegan and vegetarian foods today fool is simply stewed fava beans often served out of a large metal pot and is accompanied by a variety of spices and sauces such as cumin lime juice and garlic oil it is served in a

Small dish with a side of bread or put into bread to make a sandwich and can also be eaten alongside fries boiled eggs or salad in Egypt it is known as the nail of the stomach because it takes a while to digest and will keep you full

For hours Shuka is another dish that some people eat for breakfast in Egypt shakshuka and kaido usually looks like scrambled eggs with chunks of tomato though I have heard in Alexandria it is the more traditional poached eggs in a tomato sauce whatever way it is served

It is still a delicious meal and another option for vegetarians in Egypt musaka is a hot and tasty vegetable dish whose recipe was found dating back to a cookbook from the 13th century another delicious dish originating in the lant musaka is made with lightly fried eggplants and peppers then slowly cooked

In a tomato sauce that is bursting with flavors of garlic onion cumin and other spices the end result is a rich flavorful and mouthwatering Dish nobody can resist mlea is a famous soup that is about as Egyptian as it gets and dates back to the times of the Pharaohs mlea

Is made from J malow leaves giving it a distinct bright green color and a certain consistency one could liken to egg whites because of this slimy consistency many foreigners find it a bit off-putting but it certainly holds a special place in the heart of Egyptians as is the case with masi this

Dish could be made using veggie broth but it is likely made with chicken broth as mlea is typically served with chicken and rice all you can do is ask your server about the base of the broth and hope he understands the soup also has a distinct flavor of garlic as garlic and

Coriander are fried in ghee before adding the liquid lentil soup is next on the list or as it is called in Arabic shet ads a simple yet delicious soup containing lentils and some spices this soup is served with a lime wedge sliced onions and crunchy pita chips this soup

Is great to eat at any time and another favorite of mine during winter but if you are vegan be sure to request an no butter or zda as butter is called in Egyptian Arabic as many times they will add butter to give it a creamier texture

And richer taste okra Stu or Tajin is another dish that one can find on the vegan and vegetarian items uh found within Egypt okra stew many times listed under Tajin on a menu is a hearty tomato flavored broth filled with chunks of o ra although many times served with meat

It can be found with no meat or requested without meat however as is the case with a few of the other dishes mentioned earlier the broth may be meat-based so watch out for that bread is a major staple of the Egyptian diet so much so that the word bread in Egyptian Arabic A comes from the word life the most common bread one will find find all over Egypt is a baladi baladi translating to my country and is eaten with almost every meal in Egypt aish balad contains no milk butter or eggs and is 100% vegan and vegetarian bada is an ancient Egyptian

Dish and some historians believe that the name b B originates from the hieroglyphic word botu meaning cooked beans bada is simply split fava beans onions garlic and fresh aromatic herbs and spices these ingredients are slowly cooked and then Blended together to make this delicious dish which is then topped

With olive oil and fried onions and eaten with bread Egyptian basada is not to be confused with a Moroccan basada which consists of the same ingredients but has the consisten of a soup whereas in Egypt it is more like a dip so I’m standing outside of zuba

Where I ordered the basada and this place is actually vegan and vegetarian friendly so if you happen to be in kaido and you are looking for a restaurant that is vegan vegetarian friendly thuba is the spot it’s on the island of zalik so very close to downtown in between

Giza and downtown kaido so just thought I’d throw that out there in case you are searching for a restaurant that offers this type of food let’s get back to the video of course sauces or dips such as tahina hus and babagan will be found in Egypt as well these sauces will usually

Be found in the salad section of a menu tahina is very popular here in Egypt and served with almost everything it is a simple yet delicious sauce of sesame seeds and oil typically served on the side as a dipping sauce or as is a spread in sandwiches and wraps babaan is

Another delicious D made from fried eggplants and mixed with tahina lemon juice oil and some spices and then there is hummus which is just chickpeas mashed chickpeas mixed with tahina some garlic lime and oil um but to be honest I haven’t seen H ordered a lot by Egyptians I haven’t

Seen it on a lot of menus um it is available here of course but for example I was not able to order it at this restaurant which is why I’m not showing it to you right now so Baba Gan easy to find tahina everywhere you will not have a problem finding tahina but

They didn’t have it at this restaurant when I tried to order it and I in fact have been to several other restaurants trying to record this clip and they do not have homeless now you might see it on the menu they have it on the menu here but humus actually just means chickpeas

In Arabic so I ordered that I knew what I was getting but just to show you guys this is humus so you need to make sure to ask for salit humus if you are wanting the paste and not just a bowl of chickpeas because hus means chickpeas in

Arabic so just so you guys know Baba Taha very easy to find tahina is everywhere uh homeless not so much more is a unique item I never had until coming to Egypt and although it is very rich and heavy it is delicious Mora is the solid layer that remains at the

Bottom of a pot in which ghee or butter was made after melting it somewhat sweet definitely salty this warm buttery goodness is very decadent and I love it on a cold Winter’s day morta is eaten as an appetizer and a warning to anyone trying this for the first time you don’t

Need much as the flavor is very powerful chipsy wrap or roll is another great meal it’s easy fast to grab and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans a chipsy roll is simply fries wrapped in shami bread with fresh and pickled vegetables the sauce could be mayo or

Tahina so if you are vegan just request tahina and no mayo to be sure sambusa is a delicious appetizer for anyone looking for a crispy cheese bit similar to a samosa sambusa is a fried dumpling and filled with either meat or cheese here in Egypt sambusa dates back to the 11th

Century and is believed to originate in Iran one thing to say about sambusa though it is really hit or miss sometimes it can be soaking in grease or the breading is too thick or the cheese inside is dry strange I know but when it’s good it’s good

Creps are another fast and easy way to satisfy your cheese craving packed with cheese and veggies like peppers and olives you will find creps available all over Egypt and though many times they do include meat there are usually at least one or two vegetarian options on the creps

Menu snacks in Egypt there is a variety of delicious snacks typically bought from Street vendors here in Egypt hermis is the first one that I’ll be showing you today lupini beans or termis in Arabic is a favorite of mine and can be served as a snack at bars or sold from

Local markets or Street vendors seeds of The lupini Bean were found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to the 22nd century BCE and are the most ancient evidence of lupini beans in the Mediterranean to me these beans taste a little bit like Feta cheese salty with a similar texture and even

Taste they are an addicting little snack and just like sunflower seeds the way to eat this Bean is to pop the bean out of its skin with your front teeth and then enjoy the next snack is roasted sweet potato found from Street vendors all over the city this is another favorite

Of mine during the winter months freshly cooked and piping hot the smoked flavor is very heavy in these sweet potatoes or patata in Arabic and as someone who loves the taste of anything grilled or smoked it is heaven and then there is grilled corn you’ll find these Street vendors all

Over the city as well and in particular on the side of busy roads and in crowded areas no explanation needed here it’s grilled corn and who doesn’t love a good grilled corn on the cop omo Al is one of my favorite desserts here and a National

Dessert of Egypt it can be served either hot or cold but it it is best served hot omali is an Egyptian bread pudding typically made with a puff pastry and sweet milk as well as thick cream on top it can be flavored with cinnamon and may contain raisins and nuts omoi has an

Interesting history which I explain more about in the full video I made about the dessert kunafa is another extremely popular dessert here originating in the Levant but brought to Egypt over a thousand years ago during the faid era konafa is a thinly spun filo pastry soaked in a sweet sugar-based syrup

Called thear it’s crunchy on top and because of the syrup it is soaked in is very sweet it can be served simply as is or filled with cheese or cream but most often in Egypt I have found it to be filled with cream and not cheese additional toppings one might find in

Kunafa particularly during the month of Ramadan when kunafa is in even higher Di demand and people get more creative with it are mango chocolate or nuts basa is next on the list of desserts and this one originates in Egypt made from Salina batter and soaked in sweet syrups such

As rose water orange flour syrup or simple syrup basbousa is another delicious dessert that will satisfy any lover of sweets sahab is a delicious drink you can find here in Egypt as well as other countries around the Middle East and one can find it at cafes around the country

Sahab is a thick sweet drink made from milk water and salip powder which is obtained from the dried tubers of an orchid flour the dried tuber flour acts as a thickening agent and gives the drink a consistency of a thin pudding toppings can include nuts cinnamon grated coconut and raisins this thick

Sweet and warm drink is perfect on a cold winter day and reminds me of Christmas ham is another hot beverage and popular drink in Egypt although you are able to find it at any time of the year it is more popular during the Egyptian winter months ham sham is a Hot

Tomato flavored drink with spices like cumin garlic and pepper in it and sometimes chili powder which gives the drink a nice spicy cake at the bottom of this drink you will find a fair amount of cooked chickpeas waiting to be eaten it reminds me a lot of a bloody mary

Without the alcohol of course and is served with a lime wedge and a spoon this spicy little soup-like drink will definitely warm you up and with all the spices in it wake you up as well fresh juice shops and stands are found all over the country and are a delicious way

To cool down during the hot summer months from fresh mango juice Egypt is famous for their mouthwatering mangoes to other other tasty freshly squeezed juices like orange watermelon kiwi sugar cane and lemon mint from smoothies like banana milk or guava milk to avocado smoothies and date smoothies fresh juice

Shops are something I love about living in Egypt just make sure to request little or no sugar if you don’t want them to add it something worth mentioning for this video Coptic Christians make up about 10% of the Egyptian population and for 40 days before Christmas and 40

Days before Easter they abstain from eating chicken fish Dairy eggs meat uh so they basically have a vegan diet um these fasting periods are called sayum and you will find a lot of say yummy uh menus at restaurants so you have a lot of vegan options available during those

Times of the year as well as other times throughout the year that they are fasting so those are just some of the vegan and vegetarian foods that you will be able to find in Egypt of course I have not mentioned everything that’s quite impossible to do you have other

Great desserts like a Salia you have other foods like rice and grilled vegetables of course you have Lebanese salads like fou tabula you have foods like pasta pizza vegetarian sushi the list goes on and on so but if you have any suggestions or something that you

Have not seen in the video please leave a comment so that others are able to have more ideas maybe a vegan and vegetarian restaurant that you like in in Egypt or maybe something that I mentioned about one of these dishes but is easier to find vegan you know

Whatever kind of information you have leave a comment to help others out give it a big like if you found it helpful so that it can reach more people and yeah thank you so much for watching I hope you enjoyed and and if you did subscribe

For more I will catch you on the next One

  10. Great video! I must try many of these. Having come back from Egypt last month, I must say the variety of food is incredible in some restaurants. When I was in Alexandria I had the best seafood in my life! Fried Calamari rings with sweet chili dip was the best thing ever.

Some restaurants had Greek, Italian, Mexican along with traditional Egyptian dishes on the menu. Even trendy new Smash Burgers can be found there.

The patesserie cafes near the Alexandria corniche are out of this world! A highlight. Fresh and the highest standard of baking. All inexpensive! Like really really cheap prices for all restaurant food compared to Europe! Western currency is very strong in Egypt so you will eat like a King or Queen on very little money. I can't wait to come back!! Egypt has the traditional and modern when it comes to it's restaurants.

  11. Rn we r in Alex, and unfortunately having a hard time finding some vegetarian food other than falafel.. but in Cairo it was okay

  12. "Mosabaha" is another word for hummus, and they can't confuse it with chickpeas.

    Zooba is great! 10/10

Sweets (e.g. kunafa & basbousa) are usually made with ghee, so careful if you're vegan/vegetarian (idk what's the difference between them ๐Ÿ˜‚)
