Ever tried the fried chicken shawarma sandwich at Dune in Los Feliz?

I’ve been wanting to try daybird for almost 2 years and today was finally the day I decided to make the trip (honestly have no real reason why it took so long.) When I arrived I was the only customer there and see the cashier just using her phone and looking depressed to be there. I totally understand it’s slow and I have 0 problem with someone using their phone to kill time but her customer service was lacking to say the least and she probably didn’t say more than 2 words the whole interaction. The chef/cook gave off the exact same vibes as the cashier and it just made the whole experience inside feel so cold and uncomfortable so this visit started off pretty bad.

Now onto the actual food itself:

    Chicken sandwich (mild) 4.5/10
    – way too much breading
    – chicken was dry and tough
    – once you eat all the chicken that’s sticking out of the bun you’re left with mostly slaw and breading
    – top bun gets ice cold from the slaw
    – sandwich has no sauce making it even more dry

    Fish sandwich (mild) 7.5/10
    – great chunk of fish
    – yuzu sauce was delicious
    – can’t really taste the cheese
    – way better than the chicken sandwich
    – don’t know if i can justify the $20 price tag

    Fries 5/10
    – literally watched the guy dump it out of a frozen bag
    – they were just okay

Overall my experience at daybird was a 6/10 maybe the quality just fell off and I didn’t get to experience it at it’s peak. Definitely would never come back again.

Tried it twice. Was just okay. But that’s what happens when LA is sos saturated with chicken.

  4. Drawing_The_Line

Damn, kind of in the same boat, have yet to try it but I’ve wanted to go. Your thorough review however is making me second guess even going at this point. Appreciate your review.

Completely disagree. This sandwich is excellent. The slaw and spice was on point. I do agree howlin is better but this sandwich bangs with the best.

  6. AutomaticExchange204

i wanted to forget this place existed. it sucks.

  7. Theeeeeetrurthurts

Yeah but that rooster logo is fire.

  8. chrisgilbertcreative

I wish I liked Daybird because it is walkable for me, and yet…

  9. BooRadley3370

I’m gonna take a SWAG and say that the meal cost close to 50 bucks.

  10. Chrizilla_

$16 for a sandwich and no fries?! No thanks.

Yeah was not a huuuuuuge fan of day bird. I think 4/10 is rough that’s more like Dave’s chicken. You have to try le coupe. Best chicken sandwich hands down. There closed this week but next week give it a try. Its number one in my books, even better then howlin rays but honestly its a completely diff category of chicken sandwiches

I find most fried chicken joints average because it’s seasoned fried meat. I care more if they can fry it without drying the meat. I’ll take chicken fried to 155F because it’s done once internal temperature reaches 165F.

  13. freddiew

Daybird is for fans of thick, armor-like breading.

  14. mdelao17

Most people will probably disagree but I actually hate how much extra chicken is outside the sandwich. Lol.

  15. Oh dude you’re already in Silverlake just go to Rokbird instead!

  16. iSniffMyPooper

Main Chick is the best, their fries are like crack

The Crack Shack also gets my vote, but I think the only LA location (Century City Mall) is closed

  17. yeahohshit

I thought it was just okay. The chicken was bland and needed a lot more seasoning

  18. bunerzissou

Must’ve been a bad day because I’ve had it multiple times and it was incredible

  19. DeliciousMoments

Have we reached fried chicken critical mass yet? It’s feeling like cupcakes circa 2010.

If you wanna try a worse chicken sandwich, like absolutely terrible, there’s a spot in Downey called Crimson Coward. Don’t be fooled by how it looks, the sandwich is dry and only tastes like paprika and bad chili powder. It tastes like a terrible spice mix I made at home the first time I ever tried to make something spicy. It was like a “we have Howlin’ Rays at home” meme. It was like Wish.com Howlin’ Rays. Temu Howlin.

Howlin Rays literally perfected this art and everyone else copied. Just go to Howlin’ Rays the vibes there make it even more worth it. It’s just all hype and joy from everyone there.

Every one of these hipsterish places is.

  23. higherxliving

Daybird is actually one of my favorite fried chicken spots in la, maybe paying $80 for a fish sandwich made you feel a different type of way?

  24. VaguelyArtistic

Did you bring those fries from In-N-Out??

  25. VaguelyArtistic

Haha I just asked if OP brought them with from In-N-Out.

  26. josephrfink

It’s been awhile since I’ve been there, but it was incredible when I had it.

  27. PizzaMyHole

Should have gotten just the fried chicken

  28. pinkblueegreen

I enjoyed it, or maybe I was so hungry after shopping that it was devoured.

  29. wayneamartin

I have tried two Daybird locations, chicken sandwich is middling, fries are not good.

Bomb Chicken has my favorite fried chicken sandwich and great fries.

  30. butterycroissant

I went last week for the third time… It was delicious

  31. lepontneuf

Lol customer service at a chicken sandwich shop

  32. the_hangry_rider

Excellent fried chicken sandwich that should not be compared to Howlin Rays. IMHO the fish sandwich is elite (no need to add the caviar).
