(Update) bought a rusty smoker for $600

Few days ago I posted a photo of an offset for $700 that looked good and thick, but rusted. I bought it yesterday night and cleaned it up this morning.

Decided to buy the smoker and was able to negotiate to $600.

Woke up this morning started with scraping the whole smoker with a wiring brush, afterwards I grinded with a wire wheel and took a solid 3 hours, I then pressure washed the outside and inside before drying with a towel and letting it air dry for about 2 hours, it’s now seasoning with canola oil inside and out.

All and all I spent around $20 in supplies to fix this (already had an angle grinder just needed the wheel). I think I did a good job with it and I’m extremely happy I got it for $600.

Cooking grate is 1/4 inch thick, firebox is 1/2 , cooking area is around 38 inches

Never had a offset smoker, so Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Looks good! What’s the first thing you’re smoking?

Dude congrats. Think you did well! My advice after 1 year on my offset that’s similar in size. Just takes time to learn the fire management. Cook chicken wings or ribs first few cooks to learn.

  5. Damn night and day. Can’t wait to see some bbq off that bad boy.

I love the canola finish. I get cheap pan spray when it’s on sale, one for the grates and one for the body. Every time I fire up the offset I spray off the dirt and when it’s dry but before it’s at full temp it gets a coat. Four years outside through New York winters and the only rust is inside the firebox. You struck gold with that barrel my friend. I hope it lasts you a lifetime!

This was very satisfying after seeing the first post earlier in the week.

Oh shit. Nice 👍 great pick up.

  10. Congrats. Looks great after the cleanup.

I’d recommend doing the biscuit test. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HsvS4WLAJE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HsvS4WLAJE)

Plus I would recomend testing the thermometer with a calibrated one to see if it’s accurate. Worst case you can just adjust the cooking temp up or down once you know the temp.

Buy a sharp Ax to split wood down

Kudos my friend! You got a lot of hate in the r/smoking sub for whatever reason, but glad you went ahead — it looks great! Great buy and hope you enjoy it.

Small fires. Get your logs cut down small. Invest in a fire basket.
