We had it decanted an hour before pouring and enjoyed it over a 2-hour meal. The color was a deep garnet red, very vibrant and young. The nose was predominantly ripe dark fruits, fresh ocean breeze and a very mild peppery leather.
The palate was soft. Notes of ripe dark cherries, blackberries were at the forefront, followed by a background of minerals and a hint of smokey tobacco.
The finish was a soft buttery, velvety coating similar to cherry compote.
The tannins had completely mellowed out compared to the other vintages I’ve had. Some said this made it elegant, but I found it lacking structure for my taste. I had a 2016 Opus One the night before, and as much as I don’t tend to ‘prefer’ Opus, the ’16 had a more fruity ‘kick’ than this SE and more structure. Even felt that the Opus might have gone better with the steak.
Of course, the SE had balance, but it seemed to me that its pursuit for this ‘balance’ had turned it into what I would describe as a failed attempt at imitating a fine Bordeaux.
Good wine overall, but IMO, not great – and in no way does it justify its price.

Love that folks here review all types of wine from 19 Crimes to SC. Need a few more SQN reviews IMO to balance out the cult wine club.
