I’m only starting to take counting calories seriously after years of half arsed attempts but is this a deficit? Or is defect when you burn more than what you’ve eaten?

How did you set up your goals on MyFitnessPal? If you set up your goal to lose weight, then the calorie goal should account for your deficit. So for example, if you set your goal to lose 1 lb per week, then probably your TDEE is 1940 calories, and so a 500 calorie deficit from that would be 1440 calories, which is what the app is telling you to eat every day.

I would turn off the exercise feature. It’s usually not accurate.

289 is a deficit or your remaining calories for the day. But only because it included your exercise, which you can change in your settings, as others noted. Good luck with it! Without the exercise, you would be 52 calories over.

Your numbers already account for your exercise and movement.

    I understand what you’re asking.

If your eating goal is 1440 but you’re eating 1492, it would seem that you’re eating at maintenance but…

If you’re exercising, a lot of devices and apps don’t count exercise calories correctly and it can be as much as 20% off… Thats why people are saying that they’re wrong and to disregard it. That being said…

A lot of food labels can also be deceptive too. They are legally allowed to be a percentage off too… but I do scan and weigh food and track.

So to answer your question: It can be a deficit to exercise and burn calories. But don’t trust what the exercise app tells you bc it probably overestimated.

    * I separate my food log and exercise.

    * I check Apple Watch Fitness app and Tonal app to monitor my steps and to keep track of weight lifting days.

    * I use Lose it to log food and stay within a custom calorie goal per day. I don’t eat my exercise calories back. I think all these food apps should have the option to turn off the “surplus” but the danger is people unintentionally undereat and under fuel themselves. If I’m exercising a lot and super hungry, that means I should eat more protein fiber vegetables and some smart carbs.
