so i ordered this online to use for gumbo…i haven’t used it yet but i tasted it and it isn’t good. it smells like old stale dusty grass or old old catnip. nothing nice or unique about it. is this normal…?

How you described it is pretty much how I’ve experienced it too. IMO it’s used for thickening, not for flavor.

It’s powdered sassafrass. It works like cornstarch. It doesn’t really add much to the flavor unless you heap a ton of it in there.
