I have a slightly different mesh layer in place of the cooling rack here but otherwise I do the same. Pretty useful kitchen hack imo.

Not crazy but I air fry my broccoli

  3. toni_devonsen_28

Wait, so you’re cooking pasta and using the steam to cook the broccoli?

    That’s GENIUS.

  4. MilkiestMaestro

Mine is a smaller grate with little legs I can use with the lid on, but yes

Always good to double up on cooking and save money. You also get some minor flavor blending as well.

I used a large pot and a colander before I got an actual steamer.

Always have but I do pressure method with a cartouche and foil..can cook a dinner fast on lowest heat.

with so much air gap i am amazed this works. Kudos!

You need to patent this! LMAO great hack!

I’ve done this with a colander. Or if I’m feeling lazy have just added it to the pasta for the last few minutes of cooking time.

Brot hats a good idea, I might start doing it

  11. No but I love the idea! I’m stealing it 😊

I do something similar. I roll up some aluminum foil into about 4 or 5 balls and place them at the bottom of a pot then set a ceramic plate on top of the balls, then pour some water to the side of the plate so that the water is underneath the plate. Then place whatever food you want to steam on top of the plate and cook with the lid on.

you crazy bastard – you’ve done it!

You guys never seen a steam insert? More common than you think.

    Crazy? Debatable
    Resourceful? Definitely

I use a metal strainer over my pan of pasta water and put a metal lid in the strainer over broccoli

I’d love to try this! But how do you stir the pasta to keep it from sticking/burning at the bottom of the pot if you have broccoli steaming up top?

  18. BigSailBoat1

No this is great. Very similar to instapot

  19. Checkmynewsong

Sometimes I put the broccoli in the colander and pour the pasta over top of it. It only works when the broccoli is cut pretty small tho

My big pot has a steamer insert. I think it’s a relatively common idea, but i appreciate the ingenuity.

I feel like I’m nuking the matrix when I stream my hot dog buns like this above my boiling hotdogs.

    Well done op

Shut up and enjoy the karma you posted for

  23. I don’t know if the paint on the cooking rack is heat safe.. might leech some chemicals into the broccoli 😞
Edit: also there is a big gap between the pan and the lid

I think that getting a proper dedicated steamer insert is a reasonable trade off. It’s a little more manageable and keeps the steam in the pot and not making the kitchen damp. They’re not hugely expensive, and mine has lasted years, so a fraction of a penny per use. This one is guaranteed for 15 years.

I usually have potatoes in the pan and peas in the steamer as I have the bad habit of cooking the veggies in with the pasta to save washing up. lol. I keep threatening to wrap stuff like fish in foil and cook over potatoes but I’m not that keen on fish.
