Back to weekend Saturday morning nice and early as always and I’ve come in to check on these plants just to make sure they’re not drying out but also I’ve got another job lined up for today and a couple of things that I need to get done over weekend as
Well which I’ll go into in a second but first I brought those Peppers back out I always like to give you updates as often as possible when we’re growing things you can just see the progress of these plants and then compare them to your own
As well and these are the ones that we growing indoors by the way you can’t grow peppers outside in your greenhous at this time of year first bit of frost we get it just kill them out right but that’s those Peppers again you can see we’ve got some really good size to them
There these are definitely now getting ready to be moved on which is something I’m going to be taking care of very soon if I can get the biggest one out just have a quick look at those root systems you can see that this plant is now developing quite a lot
Roots so it’s not going to be too long before it starts to get root band so that’s the ideal time now to think about moving them so that’s definitely a priority for this coming week and I’ll just pop them into these 9 cm pops plenty big enough for
Now they’ll probably stay in there until spring as well so and then we’ll move them on into probably a 2 ler just steps at a time but that’s the update on Peppers they’re looking really healthy I have notic just there’s a couple of leaves on there that’s got a slightly yellow tinge to
Them and that could be down to nutrition because there’s not much feed in those little cells for them and we have get him some feed but it’s not going to last too long as this plant grows and starts to put on more Fage so as soon as we get these moved on
We’ll give them another top h a tomato food or something like that and that’ll just give them that little boost that they need other than that it’s potato chitting day for me first ear is at the moment the second earli is I’ll do a little bit later on and then the main
Crops maybe a week or two weeks after those but your first earlies you’ll be planting those March April but obviously you still got to be very careful of frost they’ll not do these potatoes any good it Frost gets to them while they’re buried in your containers then they’re
All right nothing’s really going to happen to them but as soon as that foliage starts to poke out at top if you get it with a frost that foliage is then going to turn black and it’ll die off and then you’re going to have to rech your potatoes all over again and you’ve
Probably lost about a month to six weeks by doing that and considering that in right conditions your first early potatoes can be ready for Harvest in 12 weeks or so then that’s quite a long time to lose so I’ve got two different varieties today we’ve got rocket which I have grown
Before and then we’ve got Castle blaner which is a new one for me to try but we need to chip these properly don’t leave them in a cupboard in a bag to chip them because what’ll happen is they’ll just grow long white stalks on top and they’re no good this
One has just started to chip in that bag you can see there and you can see they’re slightly white but that is okay because they’re only very small if we take them out of that bag now that white will start to turn green and your chips want to be about a cenm
Long and dark green to purple in color if the white it’s going to create a weak plant so if that does Happ to you for any reason if you end up taking your potatoes out your bag and they’ve already grown quite long white stalks on them just knock those off and start that
Process all over again because that potato will grow fresh ones I’ve got six of these in this bag that’s going to be enough cuz we’re doing containers they’re not bad siiz potatoes this one hasn’t got chits on at all but you can see where chits are going to
Come from if you look on bottoms of these potatoes you’ll see that there’s a dimple over it’s picking it up see that little dimple in the bottoms of both of these potatoes that’s where it was detached from the plant when it was originally taken and on the other
End that is where your chits are going to come from so in order to chit them you want to put them somewhere where it’s not too warm but there’s plenty of light and you need to put them in something to keep them upright with those little chits facing upwards
So if you’re not 100% sure just look on bottoms of your potatoes for those little dents they might be smaller than that one but you’ll still be able to see them and that’s the bottom mutator this one has got tiny little chips trying to grow on top which is
Ideal to start them off so is that hopefully you can see because Sun’s come on it’s blinding me at moment through it window and then on bottom you’ve got that dent where it was detached from original plant you’ll see the chits as they start to grow so then you’ll know
Which we round you need to put them this one’s a prime example that’s still a little bit of that stalk from where it was originally attached to plant so you know that’s definitely bottom and that’s where your chits are going to come from so I think
You’ve got it now and that goes for any potatoes that you do regardless of variety or whether they’re first early second early or main crops exact same process so what we need to do is keep them upright just sorry I was talking with me back to you then so something like this
Is perfect because you can stand them in there and they’re not going to fall over but obviously if you haven’t got one of these an old egg box is what people normally use so take that potato and just stick it in there with those chits facing
Upwards these trays are a little bit too small for these potatoes but some of them the perfect size so I think I’m just going to manage with them I’ll just squash them in so they can’t fall out so I’ve got six of those that I’m
Doing and then when I do plant them what I’ll do is I’ll put two in each container you can put one in if you want so they’ll do fine as the uh that’s all those in there right side up they’re not going to fall out and then they’ll
Go back indoors in a room that’s not too warm but is getting plenty of light and then you’ll start seeing your chats and just be aware that if you haven’t got anything up all growing on your potato when you start doing this which is round about now for first
Earliest they’ll take somewhere between five and six weeks before you get chits on them so you just need to make sure you start them off at the right time so if you want to plant these out like mid-march when it’s a little bit lighter and a little bit warmer then you want to
Count back about 6 weeks so starting them off at the beginning of February is going to be ideal and that’s why we’re doing it today I am going to put a label in this at some point make sure you put labels in your potatoes cuz you’ll not
Know whether the first ear is second ear is or main crops if you don’t do that and I’m worst person in world for not putting labels in potatoes although last year I am pretty convinced that there was some birds around and they were pulling those sticks out the little wooden sticks that
I wrote on and I think they might have been pulling them out of containers and taking them into that oy tree to use in the nest or something because we had about five containers but all of a sudden had no sticks in them so then we’ve got cassa blaner slightly smaller potatoes but
Again you’ll see there’s not a deal of difference when you look at them except that one again is getting chits on top and that’s the bottom so we’re going to do exactly the same thing with those and we’ve only got four of these but that’s plenty cuz they
Are all first earlies so that one can go in there the reason I’m doing this is because the bags have got the name rote on them so just for now anyway I’m stuffing them in these spare cells so I know which is which that shirt ear is all set
Up so you just need to wait now until they’ve got those nice dark purple or dark green chips on on them it’s about a cenm long or so but they can be longer than that just not like 6 in or something and hopefully by then it’s
Going to be a little bit warmer so you can get these planted I’m going to be planting those in containers as I’ve said previously I’m not putting any potatoes in ground so we’ll do them in containers and then I can keep them on this bench behind me so they’re
Protected they’re a little bit warmer and then we can always cover them with fleece or bubble wrap as well if it HS to drop too cold and mentioning the cold the weather’s not too bad at the moment but I have noticed that next weekend apparently it’s going to drop back down
To minus two so just be aware of that so that’s as potatoes chittered you’ve checked out the peppers they’re doing really well but another thing that I’m going to be doing is you may or may not know that we’ve got a cooking channel and on that Cooking
Channel I’ve got quite a few videos which kind of related to what we do on this channel things like pickled red cabbage and stuff like that ways to preserve things that we’ve grown and we got quite a bit more than we could use before it had spoil so i’ made videos
And I put them on cooking channel we have got a few on this channel but not all of them so this year what I thought I’m going to do is I’m going to take those videos that’s on there and I’m going to transfer them to this channel
Cuz I want everything all to be in one place it’s going to make it much easier for people if they need to look at something you don’t want to be switching from channel to channel to try and find it so we’ve got a playlist set up at the
Moment as you might remember and that one tells you what you need to sew and grow from January right through till December so you’ve got a reference you can just look at any month and you’ll know exactly what you need for that coming month what we’re doing is videos
As normal a daily or two daily one which will just keep you updated on the progress of things that we growing what else we’re growing that’s new and when we come to prick those things out and move them on but I just want to create a new playlist and have everything in
There so that as we get into the part of the year we start harvesting and maybe you’ll get a basket a tomatoes that you can’t use before they end up being no good you can just click on that playlist and we’ll have videos on there that will
Show you I to use those tomatoes to make things like spaghetti sauce pizza sauce tomato soup even curry sauce so it’s a really good reference to have all in the exact same place and that’s the reason that I’m doing it and I think it’s worthwhile doing that because we’ve also
Got other things on there like how to make carrot and lentil soup so once again a nice big Harvest of carrots you can make up a batch a carrot and lentil soup by just clicking on that playlist and seeing how you make it and then you could make a
Big batch split it into portions and pop it in freezer as you can with pretty much everything that we do it’s all freezer friendly so that by time you get to the end of the year and there’s not much produce left for you to harvest you’ve got plenty and to keep you going
Through autumn and winter over the next few days if you do see a couple of cooking videos appearing on channel Don’t Panic I’m not turning it into a cooking channel I need to get them on and get them all into a playlist all together same as we have done the sewing
And growing ones and then we’ll just carry on as normal but at least you know that those two references are going to be on this channel and nowhere else so having shown you those peppers and got those in position ready for chitting over the next few weeks I’m
Going to head back indoors because although the Sun keeps coming out it also keeps raining so it’s a biter overcast at times cloudy slight windy day so not perfect by any measure but there’s certain little jobs that we can come out and get done and then we’ll head back
Indoors where it’s warm and if you want to see what else we’re going to be doing over the next few weeks please hit that subscribe button press that notifications Bell and I look forward to seeing you at next one you all take care don’t leave these outside
