What’s going on Growers it’s James Prigioni coming  to your live from Jersey today me and tuck are   going to show you how to easily take one pallet  and turn it into a mini raised bed let’s go!

First thing we need to do is collect the pallet.  Ideally we want one with a stamp on it that says   HT that stands for heat treated we do not want  one with a stamp that has MB on it that stands for

Methyl bromide and it’s toxic. What I did was go  to my local recycling center and fortunately they   had a bunch of pallets stacked up. They allowed  me to grab one, this made it so I could select a

Good one. I think it’s worth taking a little bit  of time to find a pallet that’s quality it will   make building your bed a lot easier. Instead of  trying to use a pry bar and popping the nails out

Like this that’s going to be a lot of work plus  it will increase the chances of us splitting the   wood we don’t want to do that. Instead we’re just  going to take a skill saw and then run the skill

Saw basically as close as we can up against these  nails without hitting them. This will make it a   lot easier, a lot quicker, and it’s just going to  go so much faster. Before we start making our cuts

We’re going to adjust the blade so that the length  is about the same as the width of this board. This   way we don’t cut into the board beneath it  that much. Now let’s start making some cuts

That side’s done now I’m just going to flip  it and do the same thing on the other side both sides are all finished. Now for the center  I want to keep these boards whole so what I’m

Going to do is just take a Sawzall and then  start cutting out the nails from the back   side instead of trying to pry these out because  I don’t want to split the wood. There we go got

The nails cut out didn’t split the wood I’m going  to do the same thing for the rest of the pallet. there we go all these boards are cut now  what I’m going to do is just flip the

Pallet over and do the same exact thing  that I just did on this other side here there we go completely disassembled that was  actually really easy. Next we want to make   sure we have a square cut and as you can see my  cut wasn’t perfect, I’m not great at the skill

Saw. So in order to make this edge square what  we can do is either set up a square like this   and then just bump it up against here and use  the skill saw, or we can just take a drop saw

Which I’m going to do. Just bump it against the  edge and then make a cut. We’re going to cut off   as little as possible just so we don’t waste  some of the length of the wood. Now we have a

Nice square edge we’re going to do the same thing  for the rest of the boards, just cutting one side.   Got one side all cut now what I’m going to do is  search through the boards find my shortest board,

And then I’m going to measure that and then cut  all of them to the same exact length. I got my   boards all lined up to find the shortest one. We  got Tuck over here this guy’s a beast he’s always

Out here. If you love seeing this guy in the  videos spam some hearts down low for the boss,   the king, the guardian of the garden, young  Tuck. Yeah he’s a pretty good guy. We also   wanted to mention to check out some of the merch  at jamesprigioni.com we’ve got the new gardening

Is life merch with the garden, with the Flower  of Life on it we think it’s pretty cool and uh   we’re really happy with the way they came out.  But let’s get back to the actual build. So we

Lined up all of our boards here on this one  side now I can go through and find my shortest   board. This is my shortest board right here,  so I’m going to measure everything off that.   When I get the measurement it’s 43 and about  a sixteenth inches. So I’m going to cut every

Board to 43 inches. I also noticed I have a  few boards that are my worst boards in here,   like this one right here it’s cracked, and also  this one isn’t great either. I’m going to save

These on the side and use those as braces and  the rest of these boards are pretty good to go.   I got my board measured I measured from The Edge  that we squared up now it’s at 43 inches right

Here I made my line with the actual square and now  we’re just going to cut them all in the drop saw. Got this one all cut now  what I’m going to do is just   take this board and I’m going to use this  one as a template for all the other ones

This way they’re all exactly the same  length, I don’t have to measure anymore.   After marking all these I realized to make up the  frame of my actual bed I’m only going to need nine

Pieces. I’m going to do three in the front, three  in the back, and then the other three will be cut   in half to make up the the two ends. I just need  to pick out essentially my best nine pieces. The

Other pieces I’ll use for braces and you’ll see  as we progress a little further along. I really   only need nine pieces I’ve already got two cut,  I only need to pick out seven more. I selected my

Best nine pieces I’ve got them right here I also  have them all marked using the same piece of wood   the template now what we’re going to do is just  cut them all so they’re the exact same length.

Everything is cut to exactly the same length, now  I have it lined up on how we’re going to build a   bed. So this right here is going to be one of  the sides, these three pieces, This is going

To be one of the sides, these three pieces. And  then this is going to be the two ends. I’m just   going to cut this exactly in half. We want to make  sure that the pieces we’re cutting in half that we

Don’t have a knot right in the center where we’re  going to be cutting in half, that’ll like allow it   to split or make the board a lot weaker. So we’re  going to use these ones as the pieces that we cut

In half. what I’m going to do is get this full  length, we know it’s 43 inches exactly, so we’re   going to measure half of that 21 and a half then  we’re just going to make our cut right at 21.5.

We want to make sure we’re missing these nails  though, so if I have to use a different board   to make sure I miss the nails then I will but  we want to make sure we’re missing those nails.

All of our pieces are cut and we can begin  assembly. First I’m just going to lay these end   pieces down and one of the side pieces. Then what  I’m going to do is just take these lay them out

Just like this, we’re going to make sure the ends  are all lined up then I’m going to take my clamp. Clamp it down see if I’m pretty close those look good like that. We’re going  to clamp it together just like that,   then do the same thing on the other side.

It should be lined up pretty nicely, looks good just like that. Now what we’re going  to do is we’re going to measure   the height of this right here, so it looks like  10 and a quarter inches. Then we’re going to take

One of our braces, we’re going to cut it down  and then we’re going to have this brace be in   the center just like this. This is going to hold  this side all together, mark that with a square

Like that and then these are going to be 10 and  quarter inches and this whole board is over 43   inches we know that. So we’re going to be able to  get four braces out of each board. here we will

Take this and this is what’s going to go right  in the center just like that. I got this piece   of wood centered here. I’m just going to make  sure it lines up at the top down there at the

Bottom. Now I’m going to take my pre-drill  I’m going to pre-drill a hole one here, one here just make sure just make  sure I don’t get any splitting.   Then I’m going to take inch and a  quarter screws I’m going to attach it just like this.

And I’m using an inch and a quarter because  you see they’re not going to go through   just like that. I’m attaching with two screws just  like this. This way that the board   doesn’t shift on me when I pick  it up, and do the same thing here.

There we go that’s all in now  we can take these clamps off that right there is going to be one of our sides   looks pretty nice. We’re going to do the same  thing for the other side and then I’ll come

Back to you with the ends. Second side is all  finished now let’s move to the ends. So this   is what we’re going to do for the ends, we’ve  got the end pieces here all cut the same length

We’re going to lay them out just like this take my  clamp this one I’m going to clamp it in the center make sure we’re lined up pretty good. Looks good.   Then we’re going to take our leftover scrap  these pieces that we’re going to be using for

Braces and we’re gonna put them on the end  just like this. Do first thing I have to do   is just cut it to length, should be the exact  same as the other one about ten and a quarter.

We’ll measure this ten and a quarter then get  it cut. Got that cut we cut off the nail side.   Both these sides are cut now we’re just going to  line it up just like this, we’re going to make

Sure it’s flush at the top and on the sides  just like that then we’re going to pre-drill take our screws and connect it all together there we go all attached this is going to be  our one end we’re going to do the same thing

For the other end then we can attach the whole  thing together. Both ends are finished. Let   me bring you over to a section over here and  show you how it’s all going to come together.   What we’re going to do is we’re going to build  it on this flat piece of wood right here.

I’m going to take this end it’s going to go just  like this and you can see there’s a little bit of   a gap. The height difference, that’s okay because  this is going to be the bottom the top is going

To be down here, because this is going to make  it sure it’s nice and flat this flat board we’re   working on. Then we’re going to attach this  to connect everything together just like that,   but to make it easier what I’m going to do  first is take this board and attach it to

This just like this. Let’s get this all attached  here just going to line it up just on the edge put another screw down here let’s do the same thing on this  side now. Line it up at the top

And then we’ll screw it in. There we go, this end  is done looks nice. We’re going to do the same   thing with the other end and then we can finally  just do the last attachments and be finished with

The bed. Let’s start getting it all attached now.  So this right here this is going to be the top,   but I’m going to place it on the bottom so  it’s a flat on this piece of wood. Then I’m

Going to take this side piece here and I’m going  to put it right against the edge just like this.   You’ll notice it’s a little bit tall it’s a  little bit longer on this side but that’s okay

This is going to be the bottom the top is going  to be all flush, because we’re pushing against   this piece of wood here. Now all I have to do is  take my screws and just attach it all together.

You can see how that helps pull it out a little  bit to make it nice and flush in the end.   Now we’re going to do this bottom one Corner done we’re going to do the  same thing for the other three corners

There we go there’s the final screw. Let’s flip it  over the way it’s going to go take a look at it. There it is I think it came out pretty nice, just  to start with one simple pallet and build a raised

Bed for free can’t beat that. Now we just need  to fill it with soil and get some stuff planted.   Gonna take another look at it. I’m really happy  with the way it came out, I just gotta level it

Fill it with some soil get some plants in it but  I think it just, I think it looks beautiful to be   able to build a bed like this for absolutely zero  dollars just for it to be free and I think it’s

Something that everyone can basically do. Let’s  actually get some soil in here get some plants   in and then see what it looks like when it’s  actually filled. Looks good now level it all out then we got to grab some plants to get in here

Looks good and after using that whole pallet  these are only the really pieces that I was   left with. We did a good job of using all the  wood besides just a pieces in the center that   kind of holds the whole thing together. Let’s  get some flowers, some herbs, some lettuces and

Stuff and get them planted. Most of the bed is  finished being planted I’m just going to stick   one more lettuce in right here. Just pop it out  and then pop it right in just like that. All I

Have to do is just water it in. I’m happy with the  way it came out Tuck wants to get on here and grab   some stuff he sees all the good food he’s hoping  we get some carrots in here, so we need to make

Sure that we do that. I’m surprised how much food  I can actually plant in here and even flowers all   different kind of plants. I think it just looks  fantastic and it’d be fun to stick in the garden

Or even just having it on a porch or something,  so it’s super versatile you can plant a bunch of   different things it’s got a decent height to it  If you want you could put some landscape fabric

On the inside or if you want you could even  use an oil on the outside to preserve the wood,   but I wanted to build this whole thing for free  that was one of the ideas to just take a simple

Pallet and turn it into a raised bed and not spend  any extra money. This way you can save some extra   cash if you want to buy some plants some flowers  or even some soil. Look at this guy he’s looking

For a good snack he’s looking where all the  carrots at that’s what he’s asking, so spam   some hearts down low for the big boss because he’s  always out here always having a good time with us.   That’s today’s video Growers thanks for watching  thanks for coming out with us thanks for just

Spending the time building this bed we had  a lot of fun doing it. We hope you guys take   the opportunity to grab some pallets build  a bed and get some more food planted. I mean   the only way you’re going to be able to eat  organic food is if you grow it yourself, so

Nothings better than just coming out grabbing  some fresh stuff. This guy is ready to get some   snacks he wants some fresh carrots in the garden  he’s getting antsy we hope you guys enjoyed it   we also want to mention to check out some of  the merch down at jamesprigioni.com grab one

Of The Gardening is Life shirts with the Flower  of Life on it and before we let you go we need   to mention a thank you to one of our new channel  members Stephen Caldwell thanks for being a part

Of Team Grow. Thanks for having your hand in  everything we’re doing back here. We hope you   guys enjoyed the video got some value out of it  James and Tuck we back again real soon we out!

  1. I've tried taking pallets apart, and it is very difficult, not to mention a lot of them split. Thanks for showing an easy way to do this. Does anyone know long will pallets last with the soil in them?

  2. That's excellent, genius idea. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I'm trying plant some vegetables behind where ilive and planning go pick up some pellets at Long store

  3. Great video and good explanation. I now have the free pallets but I need to work hard to get all the tools I need.

  4. Nice. But I wouldn't say 0 dollars cost of screws, dirt to fill the box and all of your time. Time=money.

  5. My husband gets tons of palates at work. He built me 4 standing raised beds out of pallets. We just had to buy the nails, a couple of 2x 4’s & some landscape fabric. Probably spent $50 for all 4 beds

  6. Great idea. I had a major neck surgery back in Sept of 23 and I'm not going to be able to use my tiller for a while, I'm planning on using straw bales or building raised bed Thanks for such an informative video.

  7. Bro, why cut the end with the saw. Why not just cut all the nails off like you did with the middle? Also you ended up still squaring the edge. If you didn’t cut it in the first place and just cut the nails, you would have saved so much time.

  8. These look perfect! Great for square foot gardening, raised potato towers and much more. Do you preserve the wood? I like to use the redwood pallets for outdoor projects and turn oak pallets into furniture and flooring.

  9. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤love Tuck. Oh' how precious it is to see him out with you in the garden. Please watch him, because hawks can snatch him up in a second.

  10. Awesome video. Thanks. I've been wanting some raised beds but just couldn't afford them. This is a great tutorial to help me reach my goals. Keep on gardening. We love to see you.

  11. Anything made out of this crap falls apart or rots so quick. Don’t waste your time or money buy the correct wood. ✌️
