If you saw last week’s video where I made Shrimp Lo Mein, you will know that there are a lot of wonderful holidays and celebrations coming up. This week we are taking a trip down to New Orleans and celebrating Mardi Gras which is in a few short weeks on February 13. In this video, I am showing you how to make a muffaletta sandwich. The muffaletta sandwich originated from Central Grocery in 1906. The traditional-style muffuletta sandwich consists of a muffuletta loaf split horizontally and covered with layers of marinated muffuletta-style olive salad, salami, ham, Swiss cheese, provolone, and mortadella. In my video, I made a homemade olive salad and substituted the muffuletta loaf for a large Italian ciabatta bread (for I couldn’t find an actual muffuletta loaf in my grocery store). I also used soppressata instead of ham and omitted the Swiss cheese. Honestly, there are a lot of variations when it comes to the meats and cheeses you use for this sandwich, the key ingredient is the delicious olive salad. Unlike other deli sandwiches and wraps, the muffaletta sandwich does not use mustard or mayonnaise – it is the oils and vinegar from the salad that soak into the bread and give it its moisture and flavor.
