This dish is super simple and cheap yet surprisingly good. Although Coke Cola is a western product, “Cola” wings has been one of the most popular quick home dishes in China. This is a translated recipe I use myself. The above link has reference photos for each step but it is really hard to get wrong on this one. **Ingredients:** Chicken wings: 2lbs Coca-Cola: 1 can or 1 small bottle Green onion: 1 Ginger slices: 2 or 3 slices Cooking wine: 2 tablespoons Soy sauce: 2 tablespoons Star anise: 1 piece (optional) Cinnamon: a small piece (optional) **Step 1** Clean the chicken wings, make cuts on both sides to allow the flavors to soak in better, add 1 tbsp of cooking wine and soy sauce to marinate for at least half an hour (max two hours.) **Step 2** Place the green onion and ginger slices in cold water, then pour the marinated chicken wings into the pot. Cook until the water comes to boils, and remove the wings from the pot. **Step 3** Clean the pot, and then heat it to get rid of any remaining water droplets in the pot. Pour in a little oil, add the wings and fry over high heat until both sides are golden brown. **Step 4** Add rest of the ingredients (cola, 1 tbsp of cooking wine and soy sauce, anise, and cinnamon.) No need to add water. Stir well, then cover the pot and switch to low heat to simmer. **Step 5** It is tricky to make sure not to completely dry out the sauce in the end. Finish when the whole thing looks like this: mostly bubbles surrounding the wings.
Fun-in-Florida
Not cheap if you don’t just have all the extra ingredients laying around. But anyways we have cooked cola chicken around here for generations and it’s very tasty!! Bag of leg quarters or just legs or thighs would help the budget aspect.
