Sorry I know this subreddit is mainly for estimating the calories in items without labels but I wasn’t sure where else to ask
I frequently buy this canned crab meat and it’s really good but I noticed the calorie count seems suspiciously low for so much. Online, most claw meat seems to be around 68-70 or even more for that amount. By the logic of this label, the entire can would only be 300 calories. Even within the calorie tracking apps/websites, this brand was either listed with different calories or the one most similar to my package was all the way listed at the bottom so I’m unsure if this is a labelling error. I can’t find many pictures of this brand’s canned crab meat online so I thought it’d be best to ask the experts here, haha
For added context, this isn’t normal canned crab meat — it’s from the refrigerated seafood section of my local grocery store so it’s supposed to be high quality (less preservatives, lower sodium, etc)
Thanks in advance

hey felini! 🙂
so i believe the reasoning for the discrepancy between this canned crab meat and other, more common canned crab meat is the notion of water.
for example, [*chicken of the sea*](https://chickenofthesea.com/), which is a well known packager and provider of seafood across the US (but based in thailand via *thai union group*) has two similar products in terms of ingredients but non-similar in terms of calories per portion.
a listing of their canned [*blue swimming crab*](https://chickenofthesea.com/products/crab/blue-swimming-crab-colossal/) is listed as 80 calories per 85g (or 3oz), which is virtually the same as yours…
however their more “traditional” canned [*lump crab meat*](https://chickenofthesea.com/products/crab/wild-caught-lump-crabmeat/)*,* is listed as 70 calories per 120g…
this may seem odd, but if you review the ingredient list you can see that the lump crab meat incorporates water within the can which will add a lot of weight to each serving.
the canned blue swimming crab on the other hand has no water and is simply *”Pasteurized Crab Meat (Portunus pelagicus), Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate (to promote color retention)”*
hopefully this clarifies some stuff for ya my friend! 🙌
Hmm hard to say. 3 oz fresh crab came in at 90 cals on my app (LoseIt).. it was a bit further down though. I know that shrimp is similar in calories and 3 oz of shrimp is around 80 calories.
