I apologize if there is a better sub for this, but this sub seems the most friendly and least judgmental so I felt most comfortable asking you guys.

So when cooking at home, the way I count calories for food is by taking the total calorie content and dividing it by the number of servings. For example, today I made frittata:

12 Large Eggs ~864

1/2 Cup Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt ~60

1/2 Cup Whole Milk ~70

1 Tb Ranch Seasoning Powder ~5

1 Thin Sliced Roma Tomato ~11

1/2 C Low-Moisture Part Skim Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Sprinkle of Black Pepper

I add the sum of the ingredients, ~1,170 then divide by 6, since I cut the frittata into 6 pieces. So if I’m correct one piece is about ~195 calories.

Am I doing this right? I measured everything of course. Thanks in advance!

    Yes, that’s correct!

And FYI, most calorie tracking apps have a “recipe” function that can do these calculations for you!

Yes, an additional benefit of doing it that way is that minor changes in serving size will average out so you dont have to stress out about cutting 6 perfectly equal pieces.

That’s how I do it too but I definitely portion the 6 pieces out by weight not eye.

That looks amazing! How did it not stick to the pan?

You can also just weigh the final product and then each serving will be however many grams that serving is. It’s more accurate if that concerns you.

That’s what we do. My partner actually created a spreadsheet with common foods we eat, with their calories per 100g. We simply weight up each item, and it totals at the bottom. If it’s a multi meal, we just put in the number of meals/servings in, and it divides it and gives us the total for that portion. Super handy.

    Yup! you’ve got it down!

I like to use [recipe nutrition analyzer](https://www.verywellfit.com/recipe-nutrition-analyzer-4157076) to make everything easier. You just copy/paste or type in the recipe and number of servings, and it generates a nutritional label for you. It makes it a lot easier to tweak recipes-like you can see what happens if you change the serving size or make substitutions or cut down the amount of something.

    This is exactly right.

When I make something that can’t just be cut up like granola or a dressing, I just weight it and make the ‘serving size’ 10 grams or whatever unit of measurement is easiest for you so that I always know what to multiply the recipe by when I’m counting it later.
