My name isenia and 3 years ago I sold all my belongings took what had been my house for the past year and moved to the countryside of Portugal After much search we found an empty plot of land that was abandoned for the past 50 years it didn’t have
Much besides a Grambling ruin and a few old olive trees with no actual tools building or gardening experience we began the work we didn’t know anyone in the country didn’t speak the language and our home was e car had no running water or electricity but we were up for the
Challenge after 2 years of work this is all we were able to build but it was time to finally start the work in the original project that brought us here the build of our final home and food forest in our 1 acre of land 2023 was one of the most challenging years
Building our house and trying to bring back to life a desertified plot was not an easy task everybody around us thought that we were only going to last for 1 month and that every effort we were putting was a waste of time but a spoiler alert only you can set the
Limits of what you are capable of doing and in my case I hold very high standards so I roll up my sleeves and started the work in this video I want to show you everything I did during the last year to transform what was once a dry and rocky soil into the beautiful
Garden of my dreams now full of fruit trees flowers and food a work in progress that I plan on continuing in the rest of the land but that had to start somewhere so here you Go the work started the day we moved in back in 2020 once we sang off the paperwor and the property was hours the first thing I wanted to do was to regenerate the soil the land was full of dry weeds holes and was hard to walk and
Navigate but my naivity made me think I could fix it easily with just a bag of seeds and hope so I bought thousands of seeds in bulk in hopes to nourish the soil and have it ready for the next season but soon enough I learned that without the hard work nothing will
Really work not a single seat is spred so I decided to focus in one part of the land learn and observe and come back with all the necessary resources and knowledge what brings me to February 2023 the day that the real job started since most of our property is on
A hill and had two huge mountains of dirt that eventually we had to spread out I decided to start in the bottom part of it I had to pick the area that I thought was the easiest to start growing food and planting trees the flattest
Area that I love to be at because of how quiet and peaceful it felt there it doesn’t rain much where I live but when it does it floods everything in a matter of seconds and although I knew I will never have a flat land I wanted to make
Sure that there was no valleys so the water will not get stagnant in the middle so taking advantage of the mini Digger we had in the building site I came to flatten the area as much as I could remove as many rocks as I found and came back with a
Plan the next step was to take measurements to design and align the growing area for the food forest with the property lines and sunand with we decided to face it South to get the maximum sun exposure in the groing area and with all the measurements I threw
Some plans and continue with the next task the begin to make sure the water from our Hill will not fresh all this planting area when raining we du a huge trench at the bottom of the hill and across our neighbors property and hours but when I got to the evacuation
Point the mini Digger and myself got stuck in the m at this point there was nothing else I could do than to hope for the sun to dry the soil a little bit so I could finish the task which brings me to The Next Step Mapping with the dreams of growing all the food we consume the most in bul one of the crops I wanted to plant in this new Garden were potatoes and onions but I needed to start losing the herly soil we have we came with wooden sticks and a cord and started to align
The garden based on the design we wanted to test once we Mark the positions of the growing areas and Pathways I started the painful job of losing the soil with my fork and hands during the month of February in between work deadlines and the self build of our house I was able
To get the first garden bed ready gather the potatoes varieties I wanted to grow and so my Uno sits in seing Tred to have everything ready for planting day and finally in March the day of planting the first crops arrived with the help of Aspen Lolita a
Few BS of compost and my siblings I was ready to see this empty Place turned into a green Heaven because I didn’t have access to compost and had to buy it in a store my best affordable option was to grow potatoes using the Ruth Stout method which works amazingly in our area
This way I only needed a thin bed of compost to plant my potatoes and onions and once they started sprouting I covered them with hair at this point I still didn’t have access to water so natural rain was my only hope for the seedlings to sprout
By the end of March the weather started to get hot and dry I was desperately looking for a farm where I could buy a strawberry and compost I found a few but the days went by and unfortunately nobody show up which left me with no many options at this point every
Neighbor who walk by the area was hesitant something will come come out from this with no actual compost and such bad quality soil my chances to succeed were low but if you have been here for a while you make know that I don’t throw the towel easily so instead of blaming
Others for what seemed to be a total failure I did the thing that was on my hands I went online and found only one place where I could buy tiny STW BS took the two 30 L water bottles that we used during the first month where we lived at
The camper and went to my garden to take care of each and every plant covered my potatoes and onions crops with a straw and watered the more than 100 potatoes and onions I planted by hand with my watering G [Applause] the next job I wanted to do before it was too late was to trim the WIS to bring a water hose from the top of the property all the way down little did I know how hard and painful was going to be because the soil was so compacted
Most of the weeds were w perennial weights rather than the watery soft ones I was expecting after getting beat up for a few hours by flying frogs and wood stems my job was done until I could steal paper from the building Side by March 31st my seedlings were
Ready to be put in the soil but I didn’t have an actual soil for them ready to grow so in order to not kill them I transplanted every single one one from the seedling Trace to bigger boats in hopes to have a place for them Soon at this point I knew that no friend will bring me compost so if I wanted to move forward with my Garden project I had to do something which made me rethink the original PL after much thought we decided that if we were going to invest in a good quality
Soil we rather put that soil in a garden race bed than spreading it in the land since it will get mixed and probably wash out at some point so this brings me to April 3rd the day we received the wood to build our first first garden beds after many sketchy trips in the
Digger what I call the extension of my tiny arms I brought all the material down to the Garden after seeing all the time and effort I was putting in my garden project Pepe was kind enough to leave the building side for a few days and help me in the garden we install a
Temporal watering system to be able to water the sings since at this point the forecast show that the next two months were going to be really Dry the following day after bringing water down the hill we were ready to finish the Trench we use a wool F to avoid the mat to collapse inside of it added a drain pipe also covered with felt to avoid the mat filling the holes and fill everything up with gravel and the third day while working in the building of our house the first
Trees arrived we chose a mix of the cidus and evergreen trees so in the darkest of winter days the green leaves of the orange lemon and magnolia trees will shine bright in our next day off from work we started building the garden beds to protect the wood we use a natural Lin
Seed oil we design the garden beds based in the length and height of each wood plank this way I will maximize the material we got and nothing will go go to waste the final measurements were garden beds of 260 by 130 by 20 cm we use heat treated wood
That was 5.5 CM thick we could not finish building all of them that weekend the original plan was to make 12 garden beds but we were only able to build eight of them which brings me to the next chapter after many windy days our Nutri were
Waiting to get into the soil but we were waiting for the two big bags of compost we were able to order because no other car or delivery truck can get into the garden our old trusty truck carry the huge bags of 2.5 cubic m to the garden
And the day to plant the trees arrived to make sure the tiny trees a chance to survive our bad soil we used the tools and the resources we had in our hands at this time we du holes for each tree around 1 cubic M each mix the
Original soil with the compost we got and cover the base of each tree with mulch this will help the soil to dry slower during the hot summer days a few days later I threw nastor tum seeds and transplanted some of my market more cucumber seedlings to create a
Green based layer around each tree which in my experience helps to maintain the soil moisture for longer and makes the garden more beautiful summer was around the corner the temperatures were getting higher each day and my beautiful looking seedlings were close to O B at the end
Of April I planted the next crops my favorite combination called the three sisters corn green beans and squash this year I was able to get my hands on new seeds varieties and I chose to plant in this area the mus Province squash the Inca rainbow corn and laon green beans a hair
Variety from Switzerland the Inca rainbow corn is a sweet dry corn and it is a cross between the large white seeded Peruvian variety multicolor Southwest Native corns and hairlong sweet corn their 20 cm long cups will increase in color as they mature great as sweet corn roasting corn and dry corn
A beautiful piece of natural art the roots of the Corn and squashes help to break in the soil and the green beans help to fix nitrogen into the soil I find that for my climate this combination tends to be quite Hardy and survives through the most harsh
Conditions the only downside was that my water hose was not long enough to water this area but I hoped that the work with it when planting the trees plus all of these tiny plants together will eventually produce Something one of my dreams was to grow my own soybeans I find really hard to buy European on GMO soybeans and most of the time when I eat them I feel sick so this year I was committed to grow my own savings the seedlings that I prepare
Were more than ready to be put in the soil but at this point we were in May facing more than 40 Celsius degrees and the job at the building s didn’t allow me to work for the entire month we had to pour the concrete footings of our
House because the wooden forms that took us one month to build started to warp with the Sun so the only thing I could do this month was to come to the Garden the 10 minutes I had in the middle of May to tack the three varieties and
Finally remove the cords and tacks they came in with on June 1st the concrete footings of our house were finally ped and the job peepe and I did for the first half of the year was finally finished which allowed me to focus in the garden for the following
Weeks I was able to align the garden beds and this time I wanted to try something that I thought will help me control the white nature and weights so I went ahead and installed a wool F in the pathways and at the bottom of each garden bed once I finished installing
The felt in the Rest bed area I started filling the garden beds one tiny person versus 2.5 cubic M of soil I was up for the challenge and after the sunburned a few tears of exhaustion and pain all over my body I finished my work for the day
And the next seedlings went into the garden a mix of squashes eggplants papers flowers corn and tomatoes were planted at this point I realized that I saw way more seedlings than space I was able to prepare by myself I also ran out of soil so I could only feel for garden
Beds and the only thing I could do was to spread the mulch in all the walking area and I think it was this day that I had to face the harsh truth as much effort as I had put to do the extra work of avoiding the weights nature always wins
Only a couple of weeks after I installed the felt all over the garden the first Bermuda grass broke through the felt and started to appear and at this point I didn’t really know what to do next so I decided to get moving forward and dry it
Became more like an experiment to see if the felt could help me maintaining this garden with free since this Garden is far from my coming I can’t keep up with the job of withing as easily as I do in my front yard Garden by the middle of July the weather was close to 40° and in a matter of weeks we reach over 50 c° and the only thing that was left to do was to have hope I a firm believer of trus in your own heart Follow Your Passion with pride
Put in the work and release it to the universe and this was the result of all the work I did during my free and spad time for more than 6 months yes it was a lot of hard work yes it was not finished and far from being perfect and
Yes many things went wrong and didn’t work in the first attempt but when you follow your heart and do the diligent work with love and resilience sooner or later all that effort will produce its Harvest and soon enough in the middle of July my unfinished Garden gave me what I
Needed the most hope I could then complete the whole process on time it was tiring and exhausting I had many doubts and at times it felt I was showing more than I could swallow but when you put one step in front of the other eventually all those spare hours and little steps you took will
Take you closer to your dreams you learn to enjoy and be grateful for each little Improvement and when you take pride in the work you do great things will always come out of it eventually you learn that life is not about how fast you get to the Finish Line because a garden like
This one will never be built during the 60 seconds that a real or a video last a garden like this one is a life’s project always changing always evolving always teaching for me it is a gift to the senses Oh In the n9th month it was time to do the big Harvest after a harsh summer with limited water and temperatures reaching the 50 c° nature didn’t fail to produce the most nourishing nutritive and beautiful produce from colorful flowers grains fruits to root vegetables if there is something I learned along the
Process is that nature is always there to be the best version of itself no matter what because a flower doesn’t open and close according to who is walking by it opens and show its beauty regardless being able to harvest squashes and potatoes to store and eat until the next season or harvesting
Onions and papers to dry and using my kitchen every day was just what I needed to keep working and finish the first phase of this project once the weather started to cool down at the end of September I ordered the last 3 cubic M of compost and was
Able to fill in the last garden beds and plant the new crops for the fall winter season most of my eggplants and pepper plants were not able to produce during the summer due to the heat but in an effort to learn and observe I decided to leave them in the
Garden beds during the following months and once the Colder Weather arrived they look their best and the most beautiful and sweet tasting eggplants and peppers made it to our table beautiful flower bouquets were harvested from this tiny corner of the world and many be bumblebees insects reptiles and
Amphibians like frogs or salamanders had a place to eat hide and Thrive during these months the future is an unknown but a somewhat predictable unknown to look to the future we must First Look Back upon the past that is where the seeds of the future were planted none of this will have been
Possible without you each and every one of you the old ones and the new ones every View and non view every like or dislike every comment message and email good or bad everything counted you gave me the most precious thing we as humans own your energy energy is neither created nor
Destroyed it can only be transformed and with that energy I chose to co-create with nature everything that is here today and what was once a dream became a reality never underestimate the power you have and most importantly never lose that power to other people your energy

How is your back Eugenia?!
I loved this video!! Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Lovely video!
May I ask where the black seed trays and containers you sow the seeds are from?
