**Review:** Pillar Rock Red Salmon & SEKO Mackerel Fillets in rapeseed oil
**Rating:** 0.5/5
**Price:** $2.99 for each, different grocery stores
**TLDR:** I made a huge mistake… This has kind of scared me off of grabbing random tins. The salmon, tbf, was decent tasting. The problem was that it wasn’t deboned at all, and I’ll be damned if I’m choking on any of those. The mackerel was just… dirty tasting. I was so excited that it had skin on and everything, but it was just bad.
**Packaging:** Honestly, the packaging seemed totally fine! Gave me false hope that I found some decent tinned fish prices if the quality was solid.
**The Fish:** *Pillar Rock Red Salmon* was fine flavor wise. The ingredients were only “red salmon and salt” so I’m not sure how the water got in there, but either way, this was not the issue. There was skin and oils and everything in this tin and the color looked great! I was excited to try this one honestly.
The problem was that this fish wasn’t deboned, and even though I spent about 5+ minutes pulling out some of the bones from one of the many fillets… my first taste test still had some small bone parts in it.
Hell no, I got a fishbone stuck in my throat a couple weeks back from something similar, but at a much better flavor and higher quality. I was unwilling to spend the time to debone this whole tin just to have tiny bits of bone get stuck in my throat.
So I decided to open the *SEKO Mackerel Fillets in Rapeseed Oil* instead! Why not, I figured worse case scenario was that this was also inedible, but what’s the chance of that twice in one day? Pretty high it turns out. Even though this fish also had some gorgeous skin, the flavor on these was just dirty.
At this point I’ve had a large amount of mackerel, its starting to become my favorite tinned fish after tuna even, but the flavors here were just sad. I really wish I understood what happens to make some fish taste “fishy” in that bad way. My theory is poor storage conditions before they get packaged up, but like is it just the guts sitting around for too long?
So, both of these are going to turn into dog food for my pupper, I’ll spend the next two days mixing a little in with his kibble, hopefully he doesn’t mind some tiny bones (I’ll be deboning the salmon as best I can), but I’m just glad he loves fish!
**Would I buy them again?:** No, never

Most canned salmon is like this. (in circular cans) The bones are edible, but usually it is used in cooking so they get even mushier.

Now that dark pillar on the label looks like an evil monolith to me. Satan Salmon!
