They always have this little dent in the middle. Does anyone know why?

  1. The basket is most likely overfilled and the imprint is caused by the shower screen on the group head.

Reduce the amount you are dosing by a little bit.

How the puck looks after a shot is not indicative of a problem. Focuse instead on the taste of the coffee.

Your basket looks really underfilled. I suggest you pick a dose that doesn’t leave more than 2mm of headspace (distance between the puck and shower screen/screw).

I may be wrong but this looks like the puck is eroding due to a concentrated stream of water at the center?

Since people are telling you that it is both under filled and over filled, I’m going to go ahead and suggest that it’s too medium filled.

You could try a puck screen to better distribute the flow of water, and prevent bombardment to the center of the puck.

I’ve experienced something similar although no way near to this extent, caused by how the water forms around the centre screw in the group head.

Your puck looks very low/under filled, maybe the significant gap between top of the puck and group head is allowing water to form on the centre screw and flow unevenly? Either way, if you’re happy with the taste of your coffee i wouldn’t sweat it. Ultimately that’s what matters.

If you were bothered, you could use a puck screen.

I’ll guess that it’s simply how water comes out of your group head. I had a divot in mine too, so I tried changing the shower screen but it didn’t make a difference.

I use a puck screen now and that both got rid of the divot and gave me a pressure boost in the basket, so I have prettier pucks and better-tasting shots.
