Austin, I need some help! I’m looking for Yangnyeom Gehjang (Soft shell crab Kimchi – raw ferment).
I’ve done some homework but no such luck. I know about Mom’s Taste – lovely spot. They have marinated crabs available but not crab kimchi.
Do you know of any spots (Maybe close to or at the MT or H Mart) that might have crab kimchi?
If I can’t find any soon, I’m going to have to make it. Curious if anyone has had it or is aware of where I can purchase in or around the Austin area.

I feel like I’ve seen this in H Marts deli section. Not always there but I’ve seen it.
Also, somehow Buffet Palace WestGate has it on their dinner menu.
Have you checked mom’s taste on airport?
I have never heard of this being called kimchee ever. Where did that come from?
I’ve seen it at Hmart in their frozen section already prepared. You won’t find an excellent example in Austin, unfortunately.
Supported by their large Korean population, the restaurants in LA that had stellar Yangnyeom Gejang only served Yangnyeom Gejang with sides. You’re eating raw crab, it’s worth going to a place with high volume doing it right. Look for cheap flights, it’s worth it🙂

Absolutely make it yourself! There are live blue crabs everywhere right now and Maangchi has a really simple and delish recipe for them. It’s super easy to make and if you get them live, you know exactly how fresh it is. I’ve definitely seen them at Hmart but the quality doesn’t always look the best.
An nyeong ktofu has real good yangnyeom gehjang.
