I've always liked Sangiovese, but haven't tried it much outside of a few well known producers. Bought a bottle a few weeks ago since I remembered this was one of the Chianti Classicos people on this sub recommended. I opened it up a few days later and enjoyed it so much I had to go back and buy another 5 more. Now I plan on tasting much more Tuscan Sangiovese with Rosso di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montelpulciano on my shopping list this week.
Opened up this bottle last night after a long day at work, so this should be more open now that it's the second day.
The color is a medium ruby red with garnet on the rim.
Tart red cherries, blood oranges, fennel seeds, rubbed sage, espresso beans, and some sort of toffee note on the nose after letting it breathe in the glass for some time. Last night it smelled more savory with a tomato leaf note, which has now evolved into something more bright and fragrant like mint.
The palate is lively, rich, and structured, showing tart red cherries, black cherries, and even a slight raspberry note. There's also dark coffee and spice notes as the tannins grip the midpalate, loosening a bit on the finish with a hint of vanilla. The tannins are grippy and chewy with a lively acidic backbone. This will be even better in 5 years.
This was such a steal at around $24 USD retail. Very excited to be able to taste different expressions of Sangiovese soon.
92 points.
