Have a new home and a covered patio that is 10' x 14'. From what I read it would not be a good idea to grill under the cover deck so am wondering if I can place an under mat drill on the grass next to the patio. Or what other options i have that won't break the bank and won't require much effort.

I have a covered patio similar to yours and I grill under it regularly with a Kamado and previously, a pellet grill. You can put a fan to help push smoke away from the door which I do when I’m cooking low and slow.
Paving stones are dirt cheap. Grab a few bags of sand, dig a few inches down, sand, set stones, put grill on top, open a beer. The last step can be interjected between any other step. Except maybe prior to going to Lowes for the stones and sand.
Believe it or not, straight to jail.
