As the title says — I’m inheriting this massive Big Green Egg. I’ve watched 3-4 YouTube videos on how to use it and while I still feel like an absolute novice (I’ve only ever grilled on propane grills) I am genuinely excited to try and use it.

It’s clear to me this will likely need some rehabbing and replacement pieces but I’m unsure of what needs to be replaced vs. what can be saved, including the egg as a whole, or what even the pieces are called. I’d greatly, greatly appreciate any experts or folks who have done something similar that can chime in about restoring this (if it’s salvageable.)

The egg itself looks pretty good. Just clean it out and use it. The bands, spring, handle, and nest could use some work. If you’re handy, take everything apart and take a wire wheel to it all, then paint it. If you’re not handy, order new parts and replace it all. Or you could use it as is and be totally fine.

I’m sure you could find enough on the BGE website or even Amazon for replacement parts. I would research an authorized dealer in your area and just go talk to someone, show them the photos as the guys I’ve talked to at a local store have been a great help with BGE products. BGE have great warranties so did you also inherit that? May be able to get some parts replaced, at least worth looking into.

If you don’t want to tackle the job, check with your local Ace hardware. They might have a guy who can repair it as a service (parts and labor)

Get new bands, gasket and make a nest table.

I would start with the online parts list and assembly instructions. Somebody jacked that thing up. Spring on the tension band?

  6. I think it’s going to be too much work for you. I’ll be happy to take it off your hands … 😂😉

The bands might still be fine. It’s hard to tell in pictures how well they function. If the rust is too much, then replace the bands. The bands are not on correctly though. Rust happens and it can be cleaned off. The nest either needs to be sanded and repainted to get rid of the rust or replaced. The side tables are an easy fix by sanding or replacing. Otherwise it’s not a bas looking egg.

The stand looks sketchy be careful! If it tips over it won’t be worth a cup of coffee.

Tune it up and it’ll be the shiznit.
