I wouldn’t eat a whole bunch of it, but it’s OK to eat. Purported to help with stomach upset, but moreso as a tea.
What it is more than anything is a waste of basil. Basil is too useful and too seasonal to be wasting just eating as if you were a goat. Dice it or mince it and freeze it in squares and get it out square by square to enhance your pasta sauces and other stuff. Then eat lettuce.

I mean, it’s probably not BAD for you, but why?

It’s safe, but don’t eat a huge amount of it if you have any kind of clotting disorder or are on medication to “thin” your blood. By “huge amount,” I mean something like a couple of cups of raw basil every few days. If you want to have fresh basil pesto one day and add a few leaves to a salad the next day, you’re fine.

At a Persian restaurant, they served us fresh basil, onion and buttered pita and it was delicious.
