I got confirmation that they in fact did change the Reaper recipe. They said it was supposed to be a little hotter but a better overall taste. Oddly I found it very tasty but noticeably less spicy. I’ve noticed a lot of variance in spice level from location to location.

How hot is the reaper?
DHC is such a polarizing post in this sub.
I’ve been to the location nearest me about 10 times. Always get the reaper, and sometimes it’s incredibly spicy, and other times it’s just mid hot, but I gotta say, the last two times I went (maybe a month ago and last week) I got my usual reaper… and it knocked me on my ass. I’m a seasoned chili head, always order spiciest I can get, but goddamn this sandwich broke me. I still finished it, but I was sweating profusely, runny nose. I went and just got a cup of ice and sucked, chewed on ice for a little bit. I got to my truck and I sat there for a good 5-10 min to kinda chill out for a min because it just blindsided me, and I *never* have that reaction to anything spicy that I eat.
Last week I got the same sandwich and it was just hot, and *nothing* like the one I had last month. I enjoy DHC regardless, and I still tell people that their reaper is generally hot, but I also tell them that it can vary greatly.
They’re starting to open them in NJ. I’ll have to venture to the closest one. Haven’t had hot chicken since Hattie B’s STCU before covid. I’m due for some snot-inducing pain.
Howdy fellow Texan! I first visited Dave’s when it was in a parking lot in East Hollywood. I can’t believe they followed us out here to Richardson.
We’re super stoked to have it here. I will also be enjoying that reaper tomorrow.
I just had some last week and it was… fine. Spicy enough to make me sniffle, not enough to make me suffer. I went back because I thought with all the posts here about people getting wrecked they must have changed the recipe.
Every time I’ve gone I get the reaper and it’s the same experience. Decent, but overall unremarkable.
