Saw mention of Taqueria 10 de 10 in Austin Monthly and after going to see their insta and Google reviews was simply shocked to find an uncanny resemblance to the trendy, faux-retro vibe of Taqueria Orinoco, popular with Roma/Condesa hipsters (myself unapologetically included – IYKYK). If there is no affiliation between the two then this seems like such a bad dupe, borderline rip-off but wanted to check here and prove myself wrong or consider giving them a chance.

Oh it’s for sure inspired by it. It’s not mentioned directly by the article but it’s definitely implied.

There’s no way it’s as good though.

YES i posted about this and got downvoted to hell. It is a direct rip off if they are not related

Fun fact – Orinoco actually isn’t from CDMX, it’s originally from Monterrey. Maybe it’s all mental, but the Monterrey location was much better IMHO

Great, more chilangos trying to take ownership of all Mexico

That taqueria’s website is straight up Geocities. Love it.

I read “this speakeasy-style” and immediately thought PASS!

I’m from Tijuana. They claim to be “Tijuana Style”. They are good. Tortillas are 100% legit. Never had better corn or flour tortillas here in Austin. Asada is amazing. Nice charred flavor. May not be for everyone, but it’s what I’m used to. Not easy to find this style of asada in town. Pastor is alright, nothing to write home about. Salsas are good, “con todo” is perfect, it includes guacamole. Chiles toreados and grilled cebollitas on the side hit the spot. They are missing the spicy red radish though.

I will say I think they are overpriced. At $5 per taco, you are easily in the $20 per person range, not including drinks. I even talked to the owner and told them my taco was way too skinny to cost $5 dollars. They gave me 2 free tacos to apologize. I guess that’s a good sign, and shows they are open to feedback.

As far as being an Orinoco ripoff? maybe they are inspired, but Orinoco didn’t invent the white and red tile wall type of decor. Pretty much every taqueria I’ve been to in Tijuana has a similar vibe. White tile, red or blue highlights, branded plastic chairs, classic. I think they did a good job with the ambience of the place. May be worth it to check it out just for that if you’ve never been to a sit down taqueria in Mexico.

I think the best thing here is the quesadillas. It’s 7 bucks but 2 can probably fill you up. 4 tacos will cost you around 20 and they’re not very big.

Unrelated, but Orinoco is a Warao (a group of indigenous people in Venezuela and Guyana) term that means “a place to paddle” and it’s the name of the longest river in Venezuela. Pls don’t downvote this 🙁

I’ve been thinking the same thing.

Side note…my first time at Orinoco I felt like such an asshole. I ordered three tacos campechanas and they looked at me like I had seven heads. I repeated it and they shrugged it off. I got the tacos and they were HUGE no way I could eat three. When we were leaving I knocked a chair over cause it caught my hoodie somehow and I think the music even stopped while they all stared at me.
