Long-time lurker; first time poster. Admittedly my husband and I have barely dipped our toes into this tier of restaurant, but I had my birthday dinner here tonight (Friday) and we really enjoyed it. We went to Musso & Frank a couple weeks ago, also with the excuse of my birthday and had a good, but surprisingly not-excellent experience. We just aren’t into heavy cuisine anymore.
The short rib noodles were the star dish for both of us. The flavor and tenderness of the beef was out of this world! We really enjoyed the chickpea fritters and green beans. We would eat these every day if I could figure out how to make them at home! He was more into the tadka crunch chicken, and I the beet salad (which is in line with our personal preferences). The bleu cheese labneh on the broccoli was great, but we found the smokiness of the broccoli to be a bit overkill. I loved the market margarita: I normally have fun with the exploration of a signature cocktail but rarely like it enough to order it again; but this margarita was fantastic and the spiced salt flavor was so intriguing. We were also treated to a surprised scoop of ice cream for my birthday, which was top-tier. Four dishes would have been the perfect amount of food, but we’re happy we tried these five.
The service was much more attentive than Musso & Frank, and we really appreciated that. We didn’t intend on leftovers at either place, but G&tG boxed in the kitchen rather than at the table, which felt more appropriate for this kind of dining. Overall, we had a great time, and would go again, especially since we have friends who appreciate good plant-forward food and we love trying dishes with many layers of flavor that we will probably never accomplish making at home. I have made an extensive list of restaurants for us to try on date nights, thanks to this sub, and look forward to sharing more good experiences! (I hope I used the right flair.)
