Olive oil is a hot topic. We first dived into the benefits of olive oil back on episode 99 with Dr Simon, but I thought it was time for an update.

Today you’re going to learn about:

Why Olive oil is so healthy
The evidence for Olive oils benefits
How much Olive oil you should be consuming every day for benefits
How to choose a quality Olive oil
The minimum polyphenol content you need to look out for
Whether “cold pressed” means anything
Cheap and fake olive oils and whether they have any value

Dr Simon Poole is in the studio and on YouTube you can watch our taste test with 5 different olive oils. He shows me the techniques behind how to smell, taste and grade olive oils and how you can do this at home too!

Dr Simon is an internationally acclaimed expert in the mediterranean diet and lifestyle, and the nutrition of extra virgin olive oil. He has more than 30 years experience as a medical doctor, he’s a teacher and researcher in Cambridge, widely published in academic journals, and is author of award winning books including The Olive Oil Diet, The Real Mediterranean Diet, Diabetes for Dummies and Diabetes Nutrition for Dummies.

We also taste test his own olive oil called “Positively Good For You” that isn’t available for purchase at present, but watch this space because considering the flavour, quality and price of the oil, I expect to see it on shelves soon.

  1. It's not that the mediteranean diet prevents heart attacks, altzheimres etc. It's that most other western diets actively cause these diseases.

  2. So interesting, I am gutted been buying wrong olive oil for years but change starts now. Please do an episode on balsamic vinegar – used a lot in the mediterranean as well and paired with olive oil – so hard to find a good brand that one can trust!

  3. I appreciate all of your content and this was one of the best olive oil videos I've seen! Thank you both for the TRUE science.

  4. Very informative video. Olive oil seems to be a bit of a minefield finding one that is worth paying the price for. It would be great if you could suggest some to try along with the ones in the video and where to buy them, it is so easy to get ripped off. Are there any supermarket ones that are actually worth buying?

  5. Turkey is the third largest olive oil produces in the world, but the name is not even mentioned. I wonder why?

  6. The best quality and tastiest olive comes from palestine, and other middle eastern countries etc, but no one in the uk promotes them .
They are only available in Arab or Asian shops and stores 🙄
They have more aroma and freshness as compared to brands sold in supermarkets, that taste stale.

  7. This video was fantastic, so informative and easy to understand. A cheat sheet of what to look for (with examples of brands if that's possible) would be amazing

  8. Why was the Zaytuna product from Palestine positioned to be hidden throughout most of this episode?! Moreover, before Dr Simon could finish discussing it, it was very promptly put back down🤔

  9. Thank you for a very interesting discussion. I have been living in the Peloponnese for 16 years now, just south of Kalamata, in a small olive grove of just 28 trees of the Koroneiki variety. We harvest our olives and, obviously, use exclusively olive oil from our own tiny estate. Usually, we harvest early to mid November, and this last season’s oil had an acidity of 0.4%. Next year, I will try and get the polyphenols tested as I’m very interested (I’m sure it’s pretty high). We don’t use any chemicals, just chicken manure every second year. If our harvest is big enough … sadly, last year was a bad year for everyone … we ship some of our oil back to the U.K. to sell or give to family and close friends. Needless to say, everyone who tries it, loves it! One friend did a blind tasting with an expert from France, our oil, his oil and a supermarket extra virgin oil … he chose our oil as the best of the three. We were very happy. I may be biased, but I think the oil from this region is the best in the world.

  10. I gain weight when i consume olive oil. Not good to gain weight. Dr Joel Furhman, Essentyl, Neal Barnard said that oil is bad, clog arteries. If you need oil, eat some nuts. Do not listen to anybody. Pay attention to how your body feels. I listen to MD that do not advice eating olive oil and coconut oil, any kind of oil. Eat olives instead.
