FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

3 Green Tomatoes
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup self-rising flour
1/2 cup self-rising cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1-2 cups vegetable oil

1. Slice green tomatoes 1/4- inch thick or desired thickness. Add to slices to a paper towel lines cookie sheet or baking pan. Lightly sprinkle with salt. Flip tomato sliced and repeat with salt. Let rest for 5 minutes.

2. Add buttermilk to shallow dish. In another shallow dish add flour, cornmeal, salt & pepper. Whisk until well blended.

3. Dip each slice of tomato into buttermilk. Shake off excess buttermilk and drench into the flour mixture until well coated. Let rest on clean plate.

4. In a 12-inch heavy bottom frying pan, over medium-low heat, add 1 cup of oil. Heat oil to 325 degrees F. Gently add coated sliced tomatoes to heated oil. Fry 2 minutes per side or until golden in color. Add additional oil when needed during frying time.

5. Drain fried GREEN TOMATOES on paper towels. Serve immediately with or without a dip.

TIP: Keep FRIED GREEN TOMATOES heat in a preheated 200 degree oven up to 20 minutes.

  6. I grew up on fried green tomatoes, made from recipies from the south (Georgia) and central Ohio and of all the fried green recipes I've watched on tube yours is the absolutely the best end the closest to true southern fried green tomatoes.
