My pellets smoldered all the way up into the box and now the inside looks like this
It doesn’t flake off in small pieces, but I can pull the inside off. Is it still safe to use? Would using a high temp spray paint be a good idea for a fix?

scrape, GOOD vacuuming of your auger channel, repaint with High Heat. add pellets, let it cook with the lid open for a couple hours to ensure you don’t have more paint chips in the channel somewhere. Then, try like hell to figure out why this happened.

It was likely caused by not vacuuming out debris from the firepot. This clogs the pellets at the exit of the auger and can lead to the fire jumping into the auger. Proper maintenance is a key to keeping pellet grills running properly. This is especially true with cheap off brand ones that are cheaply constructed and don’t have safety features to detect that something has gone wrong.
As another commenter said, scrap out the loose chunks with a putty knife and run the auger on prime mode to clear out the old paint. Then you could repaint with rustolium high temp grill paint or just leave it bare (if you don’t care about rust).

Did you follow the recommended shutdown procedure on the top right of the lid?

That happened to me once. I went from a 500° degree temp to shut down mode. If you do that the fire in the fire box doesn’t go out completely and it will do what happened here. At least it did mine. I now shut down from a high temp in increments of about 150° or so until it’s down to 150, then i go into shut down mode. Sorry this happened to you
I have had this before. If you have moist pellets this will happen. Also on my yoder the box on the inside did not have the high heat silicone around the pit.

Were your pellets wet/damp?
Looks like a [replacement hopper](https://shop.fairgameus.com/products/pellet-hopper-assembly) is $165 if you want to replace it
