today I’m so excited because I will
share with you how much does it really
cost to eat kosher compared to non-
kosher by comparing up the price
difference between the two while
shopping I will of course add my best
tips and tricks on how to pick the best
produce what we look for to make sure
our food is bug free as well as is how
to recognize kosher food and show you
how many products use really surprising
ingredients in their ingredients list
which I’m sure will surprise you and
because we all feel the hike in prices
for our groceries whether we eat kosher
or not especially in the last 2 years I
will also conduct a little experiment
while shopping I will do the exact koser
Walmart grocery haul I did two years ago
and I will compare the prices I paid
then to the one we are currently paying
and I cannot wait to share with you the
results because I think you will be
shocked and if you’re new here hi my
name is Sarah Mona and on my channel I
share all facets of my Orthodox aaric
Jewish Life as a full-time working mom
with small kiddos so please don’t forget
to leave this video a big Thumbs Up And
subscribe to our Channel let me put on a
pretty tile and let’s jump into
it when I arried at Walmart accompanied
with my best two helpers we start with
the produce all produce are potentially
kosher as they are not processed but
some have big insect infestation issues
for example when we choose any citrus
fruits we have to look for two things if
they have soft spots which often is
where the worms will reside like this
soft spot and also we are going to look
for these removable black spots because
often these black spots are not dirty
but insects called scale insects these
insects can easily be removed by
brushing the surface of the skin under
running water but usually I try to avoid
taking citrus fruits with these insects
to circumvent any issues in our last
video we took a bag of pairs but today
we will take seven individual pairs
because there were no bags of pairs
beside the organic one which is a nogo
because of course it would be way more
expensive
next item on our list zucchinis I avoid
for them to have their skin open and
have their flesh exposed I like to take
them super dark and firm like these
ones for the eggplants I take the darker
one with a small belly button for the
most delicious eggplant so the first one
as you can see is kind of pale but the
second one is super firm and dark with a
small belly button and this is why this
one is coming home with
us for the coriander one of the best way
to pick it is to make sure the stems are
nice and firm as well as the leaves this
bunch is a big no no as some of the
leaves are already past their Prime and
they will make the rest of the bunch
Decay faster so this one which is firmer
and fresher will come with us for the
baby carrots we use as snacks I always
look at the pack of carrots to make sure
none of them are rotten I also pay
attention to the expiration date because
today the organic pack of baby carrots
is the same price as the regular one I
will take the organic carrots for the
celery often I try to take organic
celeries but boy oh boy today they are
not great they are fully infested with
insects as well as plus traces of leaf
Miners and this is going to be my
Telltale sign not to take the organic
one so now we will take the simple
celery
stocks for the green beans I always look
at the expiration date on the bag and
also I look how the green beans look if
they are rotten or broken like this one
it’s often a Telltale sign the bag might
be infested with beetles or worms but
this one looks great for the mushrooms
to make sure they are fresh and not
infested with mice I make sure the skirt
of the mushroom is nice and tight
against the stem for the tomatoes we are
in luck they are only a do a pound the
way Naomi chooses them is that she will
make sure the tomato is firm and the
skin is smooth and of course without any
holes for the bell peppers the pack pack
of three does not exist anymore but we
have a pack of two and we always make
sure that there are no holes on the
surface like this one which could be
once again an entry point for worms or
insects but this pack looks
perfect for the baby Tomatoes I’m having
such a hard time most of the boxes at
first glance look okay but as soon as we
look a little bit closer we see in every
box that there are at least one really
damaged tomato which could be infested
of course and because some of the
tomatoes are really in bad shape this
could easily lead for the box to turn
bad much faster than a box like this one
where the baby tomatoes look so fresh
and none of them are visibly damaged so
of course I’m going to pick that
one for the sweet potatoes Naomi will
look for the one one where the skin does
not have any holes which would be once
again a great entry point for warms and
insects for the ginger because we use it
in everything from our Ginger shots to
our chicken recipes we take a huge knob
of Ginger I particularly love making
fresh ginger with lemon and honey tea a
way to relax for me or unwind at the end
of the day how about you do you like
like it too we take some spaghetti
squash we absolutely love it but it
seems that in the last two years they
are continually shrinking in size but
the price is definitely not shrinking
next up the meat we are very blessed to
find kosher meat in our Walmart and as
you know we eat kosher meat which means
for mammals they have to have split
hooves and chew their cuds and for the
birds they have to not be a bird of pray
spray and a good example would be
chicken we take minced chicken to do our
chicken burgers and stuffed peppers and
now me helps me to take some whole
chicken we always look for the wrapper
to be intact if we compare the price for
kosher meat to non Kosher meat the
Kosher meat is usually slightly more
expensive than the non- Kosher meat and
that is because all the animals are
inspected by the mush or the shet once
processed to make sure they were healthy
and have no signs of diseases broken
bones or any other defects that would
render the meat non- kosher the meat is
also soaked in cold water then salted to
remove any residual blood as we are not
allowed to eat any blood as Orthodox
juice all these extra steps are more
time consuming and of course they incur
more costs for example the chicken
breasts were 1998 per kilogram and the
non- kosher chicken breast rest wereth
$15.50 per kilogram because we do not
eat a lot of meat during the week for us
this difference in price is worth it to
have kosher and higher quality meat for
the spices these are the specialty
spices I took last time and they are so
much more expensive than regular spices
but the advantage of course is that they
are Kosher for passover as you can see
it by the peak next to the kosher
certification the Walmart brand spices
are Kosher as you can see with the MK
kosher
certification and when I compare the
price for the non kosher spices to the
kosher one that are Walmart brand the
non kosher one are more
expensive Naomi takes four packs of
Chinese noodles they are
a157 per 200 g we absolutely love using
them with our teriyaki chicken and
grilled vegetable combo and for the non-
kosher one I think you’re going to be
surprised because they are 5.47 for a
bit less than 500 G making the non-
Kosher Chinese noodles more expensive
than their kosher
counterpart to be comparable to our last
video we will take some Israeli couscous
and I do not know of any non- kosher
equivalent but if you do know please let
me know in the comments below
this is an easy side dish that we love
especially with grilled
onions we’re going to take two packs one
whole wheek and one regular
one we take these mini croutons for our
soups I always make sure for anything
that is with a cap that is removable
that the seal is intact because more
than once I came home with a container
that was not sealed did it ever happen
to you they don’t have the same small
koutons but here is how much it costs
for non- kosher koutons of course they
are less expensive but the weight is not
comparable making the non- kosher
Crouton more expensive for the
breadcrumbs Leia will get the regular
American one with some Pango flakes
these are once again specialty
breadcrumbs but for the more common
breadcrumbs like this shake and bake it
is comparable in price to the non kosher
one it is true that the non kosher one
will be a bit less expensive but if you
look at the list of ingredients you do
have possible milk and eggs as well as
sulfites which usually I try to avoid
for the can tuna I still make sure the
cans are not dented and I’m so happy so
many of you confirmed that you do it too
so I feel less alone what is interesting
to note in cantuna is that most cantuna
are Kosher and the difference is that
this kosher brand like star and katam S
we use the M or the person who verifies
the boxes of fish before they are canned
we’ll verify that every fish in the box
is kosher and that way of verification
is following the Orthodox aaric Jewish
law for the U Cuna they follow the
ashkanazi law which is a bit different
when I looked for non kosher tuna I was
surprised to see that the non kosher one
was more expensive than the kosher one
and I was wondering why and when I
looked at the list of ingredients boy oh
boy was I surprised thank God it had
tuna but it also had some pyrro
phosphate it also lists the possibility
of having shellfish as well as milk eggs
and sulfites which are all ingredients I
do not want in my can of tuna I’m
curious to know do you enjoy these extra
ingredients in your tuna let me know in
the comments below next for the snacks
we’re going to take these veggie straws
they are o you parve meaning that they
are not milk nor meat so we can eat them
with anything and the children
absolutely love them I wanted to point
out that a cheaper version does exist
227 per bag and it is kosher
C but when you look at the ingredients
list boy oh boy they have extra
ingredients like silicon dioxide which
is a definitely noo in our family
compared to the other ingredient list
which is cleaner and therefore is going
to be your choice yes it is a dollar
more but I think that it’s totally worth
it what do you
think for the coffee I still take deaf
instant coffee to make at the office or
on Shabbat I know it’s not super healthy
but I really love a warm cup of coffee
during my long on calls at work all the
other instant coffees I looked at were
kosher so they were all the same price
when I have a bit more time to brew my
own coffee and I want to feel a bit more
boie I love this decaf neor coffee
because it is not chemically treated to
make a decaf like the other brands that
use chemical solvents like ethyl acetate
or methylene chloride to make their
coffee
decaffeinated I use it in my French
press and you can notice that on the box
the kosher certification has a p next to
it meaning that if the container was not
open before Passover I could still use
it for pass over on a side note
something you might not know is that all
ground coffees or full coffee beans with
no extra ingredients are always kosher
even when they’re not certified kosher
and this this is why whether it is
certified fosher or not the coffees are
the same
price for the baking products they do
not carry the full Bob’s meals line like
before including my baking powder
without aluminum but they still have
this amazing egg replacement this is
what I was referring to to replace the
eggs when I use raw eggs in my recipes
including my homemade ice cream recipe
because they do not have the same baking
powder as last time I’m I’m going to
take regular baking powder and because
it is a processed product of course it
will need a kosher certification and as
you can see this one is okay kosher
certified the price for the non- kosher
baking powder is a bit less expensive
for the Mayo they don’t have the one we
took last time so we will take some
helmet it is 547 on special and the non
kosher one is the Great Value brand and
it is a bit less expensive at this point
I’m curious to know do you think so far
we will pay more than what we paid 2
years ago for the same kosher weekly
grocery haul and if so buy how much
whether in dollars or in percentage let
me know in the comments below and if you
are the closest I will send you a
voucher for a coffee on me for the soy
sauce they still don’t have liquid
aminos but I’m so grateful they still
have this one and it is still kosher a
lot of time non- kosher soy sauces will
have hidden non- kosher ingredients like
in this one and in this case the kosher
soy sauce was less expensive than the
non- kosher one for the oil there is no
more infused oil like the one we found 2
years ago so I will do my own by using
this cold press virgin oil that is
Certified STAR K kosher and it is also
kosher for Passover there are no non-
Kosher olive oil so I will consider that
for olive oil they are the same price
whether kosher or not I take some canola
oil and here they have kosher and non-
kosher oils that are about the same
price and you might be asking yourself
what is the difference between them and
usually the difference will come from
how they are refined and also where the
oils are processed as many times both
animal and vegetable oils are processed
on the same equipment making the orals
non kosher most of the time for the
sauces here are the two sauces I bought
last time and even though usually they
are Kosher I always make sure they are
still kosher as often products can lose
their kosher certifications whether they
change their recipes adding non- kosher
ingredients or simply they do not want
to be certified kosher anymore thank God
both are still
kosher I tried and tried to find a
cheaper non- kosher sauce but I really
could not all the one I was looking at
that were non kosher were all more
expensive for the ketchup all the
ketchup Brands were kosher so there was
no difference between kosher or not they
did not have the organic one so we took
the regular one fun fact fact the recipe
for the hindes ketchup varies from
country to Country here in Canada the
ketchup is made of tomato paste sugar
vinegar salt and spices and if you look
on the website of Hines USA you will see
that the recipe contains high fructose
corn syrup and corn syrup instead of the
sugar I’m curious to know were you aware
that the recipe from country to Country
for the ketchup was different let me
know and the the comments
below next we have the fries which is a
super treat in our house the one we used
last time are not Kosher anymore as they
change their recipe but what is funny is
that the same brand some are Kosher and
some are not when I look for non- kosher
fries usually they are about the same
price or a little bit more expensive in
the end we took this brand and by the
way these fries were delicious they are
certified OU we took two packs and they
will last us about 2 months and yes they
were less expensive than their non-
kosher
counterpart then we have the eggs which
are always kosher when they come from a
kosher animal I still verify each egg
one by one to be sure they are not
broken I am going to look at the top and
look at the bottom of the the box to see
if I see yolk or anything leaking and
this box is amazing I don’t know about
you but here the price of the eggs
skyrocketed especially in the last year
or so did the same thing happened to you
and you’re part of the woods I would
love to know I need some vegan butter to
make our delicious chocolate chip
cookies and I wanted to show you
something a lot of time on the label you
will see things like vegan or made of
vegetable oil or things like that but
when you look at the kosher
certification you see that is dairy
which tells us or it has dairy in it
directly or it was produced on a dairy
equipment but when you look at this one
it is certified parve which confirms
that there is no milk nor meat in it and
this is why this one will come home with
us a funny thing you might not know is
that tissues to be used on Shabbat need
need to be kosher what I mean by that is
that they have to be or pre-separated
before Shabbat if they are stuck
together like this brand because by
separating them from their togetherness
we are creating a new single entity that
can be used which is not permitted on
Shabbat but Brands like Kleenex and
puffs have tissues that are not stuck
together they are pre-separated and they
can be used on Shabbat for the plates
the previous Great Value brand is not
available anymore so I will take some
Hefty and Chinet and they do not need to
be koser I know that paper plates are
not the best but sometimes after a long
day and difficult day at work I really
do not feel like doing the dishes how
about
you finally we can go to the cash and if
you have been here for a while you know
that self checkout is my friendy and
therefore I am so happy my two helpers
are there and they are more than happy
to take care of the self
checkout and here’s the total four weeks
worth of Kosher grocery for a family of
five eating kosher
$383
61 and if we compare it to the
$280 and3 2 years ago
that was an increase of close to
40% which is
mindblowing and if we tally the same
grocery if I use non kosher food we
arrived to a grand total of$
39309 which is about $
29147 USD so in a nutshell eating kosher
was about $10 less than eating non
kosher at this Walmart are you surprised
about this result did you think that
eating kosher would be more expensive
than non kosher let me know in the
comments
below thank you so much for being here
it means the world to me and know that
in my book you make the earth a better
place just by being you and by you being
here and if you’re here until the end
please write in the comments I love a
good bargain so I know I was not alone
and if nobody told you today know that
you are loved and you are enough just
the way you are until next time stay

  1. I love a good bargain. Well in my country (indonesia) kosher products always more expensive 😅 im not jewish but i dont know i always choose kosher product than non kosher one..

  2. I so enjoy your channel. To me, you are a beautiful, refreshing spirit. You brighten my day! Thank you for taking the time to share your life’s journey with us. 🤗

  3. I love a good bargain!
My theory on why eating kosher is a little cheaper than otherwise is material cost! They probably use fewer filler ingredients in kosher foods. Fewer ingredients, especially complex chemical components, means less work and lower costs. But that's just my theory!

  4. On a chance, I searched frum it up. YouTube hasn't thrown you in my list for awhile, no reason why, as I am subscribed and notifications are on.

Anyway, YES, prices have risen, and looks like that's so more in Canada. YIKES. Nevertheless, good shop! 😊

  5. Always interesting to watch your shopping investigations! I too read all the fine details for health reasons. Great video as always ❤🇨🇦

  6. I was surprised that kosher food costs less. I am going to check my local Walmart to see if they have as much as yours in Canada.

  7. Even if my family told me to have no jewish anchestors, as well as my familytree recherche showed, we ARE doing so MUCH in the same way!! And i love all your videos so much , please go on !

  8. I love a good bargain ❤ ty for this video. I wish we had these options in Spain. It’s such a challenge here. There’s nothing at the supermarket, nothing has kosher labels, only halal. I try to go to a city far away where there’s a small kosher store. Ty, this video made me feel better

  9. Wow, I was shocked by the Tuna. I live in the United Kingdom and on most of our tins, especially the ones that I buy the only ingredients are Tuna and Spring Water. No added preservatives or sulphites.

  10. My grandmother always taught us to never buy dented cans. You are not alone. I shop a little differently. I hit the center non refrigerated items first , then produce, frozen, meat & dairy last.

  11. 17:56 I like buying the simply Heinz as it uses sugar (or last I checked, it’s been awhile since we’ve bought it), even being close to the “source” (I live not terribly far from Pittsburgh, where Heinz is best known).

  12. I love a good bargain! And I'd love to shop in a store like that one with wide variety of kosher food. Here (Finland) kosher meat is sold only in Helsinki area (about 8 hours away) and it is always frozen. And the price is double compared to non-kosher meat. And Heinz ketchup contains tomato paste, vinegar, sugar, salt, and some kind of spice mix that contains celery

  13. Maybe it’s just the Walmart’s in my area, but the produce is never great and does not last as long as say produce from Superstore or Safeway. Maybe it’s what the produce is treated with before it’s sold in stores to make it last longer.

  14. I order my produce online(Thrive Market) being one of them, or go to the farmers market. After watching the process of the grocery stores delivery system, it was a no for me.
