And so, I wanted to know — was the classic style dead and gone or was 2022 an anomaly? Certainly, 2023 had been nearly as hot as in France as the year before, with several nasty heatwaves lashing the country particularly in late summer and fall. Needless to say, it is with some trepidation that I crack open my first bottle of lightly chilled Raisins Gaulois 2023.
On the pour, it shows in the glass with an extremely light, translucent purplish pink.
The aroma is of thyme, blueberries, freshly turned dirt, and ripe plum, brisk and active in the glass.
The taste is bursting with punchy, crunchy cranberries and rounded, mellow plum, which balance each other in a simple yet perfect pairing. Oddly enough, I also sense a very tiny vanilla bean note, somewhat powdery, almost like an unsweetened marshmallow. It disappears almost as soon as it shows up, and it’s kinda nice. As I swallow, there’s an excellent lash of acidity on the tongue to clear it all out and invite the next sip. The finish is exceptionally clean.
My verdict is in — this vintage is *classic* Lapierre and *classic* Raisins Gaulois. No frills, nothing more than it needs to be, and both refreshing and satisfying. In short, I’m very happy to report that it’s once more the wine I know and love. I’m hoping the Morgon shows out similarly when it’s released in the US next year.
As for this? I bought a case.

I used to buy so much of this, thank you for reminding me, now I need to go pick up a few bottles for the warmer weather!

In the last year, I’ve had the chance to review both the [Lapierre Morgon “N” 2022](https://www.reddit.com/r/wine/comments/1bq1cbu/2022_lapierre_morgon_n/), as well as the [Raisins Gaulois 2022](https://www.reddit.com/r/wine/comments/13gsq9d/lapierre_raisins_gaulois_2022/). Both were somewhat “bigger” wines than usual — more tannin, more sweetness, not as light on their feet, a little sluggish.
