Hello from the 1960s! Waldorf salad is a true blast from the past, and its so so yummy.
Well, it is when you make it with sweetened whipped cream and not mayo….unless you really, really love mayo…haha!

Heres the recipe:

Sliced apples, celery and grapes
Chopped Walnuts
Sweetened whipped cream (Check out that video here:

1. Dish up as much of the fruit and walnuts as you want and add just enough whipped cream to bring it together.

2. Enjoy this blast from the past.

hi guys welcome back today we’re doing retro foods come on and jump in the time machine with me because we’re going back to 1896 welcome to 1896 via the 60s all right so we’re going to the waldron festoria hotel in new york where the maitre d oscar chelsea i hope i’m saying that somewhere close came up with this recipe of spur of the moment and it became an instant success and they called it waldorf salad all right we’re going to jump right in now in the original version of this dish they used fresh apple and celery and that was it oh and the mayonnaise did i forget to say mayonnaise yup that was it fresh apple celery and mayonnaise so we’re going to recreate that today this is going to be so fun all right now we’ve got our apple cut we’re just going to chop it the rest of the way here you want it in kind of bite-sized pieces all right now we’ve got our apple all nice and chunked up oh let’s get that one one more whack you want them about you know even about the same size all right we’re going to do a little bit of celery here i’m not quite sure what the ratio for oscar was but i’m thinking a little bit more on the apple than the celery you know to me all right and then because we’re here in the south we’re going to use duke’s mayonnaise because dukes is the best all right now and just that tiny little bit you can see that that is coming together okay all right and we’ve got that all incorporated and this is the original waldorf salad guys apple fresh apple celery and mayonnaise okay we’re going to spoon it into our dish okay guys this is it as i understand it and then the research shows this is this is it so we’re going to taste this mayonnaise on apples yum it’s so good it’s very different it’s okay i’ve had stuff that’s worse than that but isn’t it amazing guys that this this was an instant success and it was all the rage now since then there have been tons of variations done on the salad and when i was a little bitty kid in the late 60s i’m going to show you the way that my mother made it then and we loved it okay guys so this is how we made it well how my mom made it and i have made it over the years all right so we’re going to do two fresh apples once again you want your fresh apple we’re just going to chop these up in nice bite-sized pieces you can use whatever kind of apple you want guys um gala’s fuji’s something nice and crisp works really well in this recipe something with a little bit of tartness to it works really nicely into the bowl they go all right and then into that goes a half to one cup of grapes seedless and sliced in half whichever kind is your favorite and then in goes our celery now you remember that celery that funny ingredient right okay and the one third to a half cup chopped walnuts whatever or you could use pecans my mother always used walnuts english walnuts and then we’re gonna put in fresh sweetened homemade whipped cream okay and my mom always put in a pretty good generous amount like that so i’m feeling extra generous extra dollars and then just stir that together fold that whipped cream in look at how lovely that looks already you just bring it together until it’s like that then we’re going to spoon it into our serving dish so here we go side by side guys um so good this the one that my mom always made with the fresh whipped cream this one the original that oscar czerski hopefully saying that name right at the waldorf astoria hotel came up with in 1896 and you know what i have to say if you are a real mayonnaise lover you’re prob you’re probably gonna like that one pretty good me i like this one because i like the freshness of the the whipped cream that coolness on my palette to me that goes so well with the fresh apples and and all that good stuff in there but it’s fun to try new things right and it’s time to try old things too don’t neglect that in life sometimes bring a little bit of the past forward is so great it will amplify your life right so give me a like send me a comment on there hit that notify bell guys and check us out on instagram and facebook we’d love to hear from you hope you enjoyed this and we’ll see you next time on retro foods with things to you does all right between pressing that laundry and doing those dishes the busy homemaker needs some tips for quick and efficient meals in the kitchen to provide for your family afford how about this one waldorf salad it’s salad without lettuce your kids are sure to love it bye
