In the 1970’s, Grandpa and I took a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. We visited the historic Colonial Village and we picked up a cookbook that featured many old recipes. This is a vintage recipe for Pumpkin Pie that was dated from 1829. It probably goes back even further than that. It’s very easy to make and it is delicious too.

in the 1970s we took a trip to williamsburg virginia we enjoyed visiting the colonial village and trying some of the traditional colonial foods i would like to show you this recipe for pumpkin pie that goes all the way back to 1829. it’s very simple to make grandpa is going to make the pie crust the ingredients are one cup flour six tablespoons cold butter four tablespoons ice cold water the first thing we’re going to do is put the flour in a medium-sized bowl cut in the butter with a pastry blender or forks until mixture is pebble-sized crumbs grandpa will add the water now and it’s going to blend the mixture until it pulls together so the dough has been formed into a ball and now grandpa’s going gonna place it on a lightly floured [Music] grandpa is rolling out the dough to a 13 inch circle [Applause] grandpa is going to gently roll the dough around the rolling pin now he’s going to unroll it over the pie clay [Music] grandpa has to press the edges now and tuck them under as you can see grandpa is crimping the edges grandpa is gonna put poke a few holes in the bottom of the crust with a fork before we bake it grandpa now will be putting the pie crust in the oven at 350 degrees for seven minutes the ingredients to make the pumpkin pie are two cups milk one beaten egg half a teaspoon of ginger half a teaspoon cinnamon 1 4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons molasses 1 cup mash cooked pumpkin to make the pumpkin pie filling we just have to mix all the ingredients together well we gotta beat it together well so i’m adding my pumpkin filling my milk [Music] my beaten egg my ginger my cinnamon [Applause] my molasses and the sugar and that’s how easy it is to put this together for the filling and now i just have to heat it well it’s been all beaten now and it’s ready to put the pie crust but i wanted to mention that the milk i used was whole milk because years ago they didn’t have skin milk or low fat milk it’s best you use whole milk for this recipe now i will pour the filling into the pie crust okay the pie is in the oven and now i’ll bake it till it gets nice and firm the pumpkin pie is out of the oven and we had it baking for 60 minutes [Music] grandpa is now going to taste the pumpkin pie you could have it plain or you could serve it with a little whipped cream grandpa likes to have it with the whipped cream so how does it taste grandpa let you know in a minute mom [Music] it tastes like pumpkin pie ma you taste the spices in it the cinnamon the ginger now i had it without the whipped cream to taste the pumpkin pie now i’m going to have it with the whipped cream which i like really [Music] delicious and how did the crust come out that you made grandpa crust came out good nice and soft not too hard i’m glad you like it it’s a very nice and simple pumpkin pie to make and this is homemade pumpkin pie taking the pumpkins making the pumpkin puree adding the ingredients better than the store-bought puree of course homemade pies are much better than store-bought any day [Music] do [Music] you

Did you use REAL pumpkin, or the canned Squash kind?
Crust:
1 c flour
6T cold butter
4T ice cold water
Put flour in large bowl, cut in flour. Add water and mix with a fork and until it has a nice texture and will form into a ball. Put on floured board. Roll out the dough to 13" circle.
Roll dough on rolling pin and unroll over pie plate. Pat in gently. Press edges and tuck under. Crimp edges (nicely like Grandpa does!). Poke a few holes with a fork.
Bake empty crust at 350degs for 7 min
Filling:
2c milk–whole milk is best
1 beaten egg
1/2t ginger
1/2t cinnamon
1/4c sugar
2T molasses
1c mashed cooked pumpkin
Mix and beat together well.
Pour filling into pie crust. Bake until firm, 60min.
Taste! Plain or with whipped cream. Grandpa likes it with whipped cream.

I grew up 25 to 30 minutes from Williamsburg. My parents and I and my siblings went to Williamsburg a lot. My Momma loved the pottery there. I love Williamsburg. Your mixing bowls are from the 70s too. I wish I could find some like them now. My Momma and Grandma had mixing bowls like yours. I like pumpkin pie with whipped cream too Grandpa. Grandpa is a good baker.

Howdy !! You know, there are just some recipes I love to keep collecting, and pumpkin pie recipes are one of the classifications I continue to keep adding to. So, I will be adding this one for sure. Looks like a very interesting trip and it was interesting to see the pictures. I'll think of you folks and your trip when I make this pie. Thank you for another great video. I have 2 copies of the Colonial Williamsburg Cookbook, circa around that same era (1970s or so). One was mine (well used and falling apart), the other was my Mom's (still in good shape). Have good memories of visiting there with my Mom or both my folks at various times. (Dad nabbed an apple once off one of the trees. Shhhhhh! Don't tell anyone!๐) Last trip I ever took with Mom (and after Dad passed) we went back there…Brought a photo with me of Dad in the stocks, from that earlier trip; went back to the same spot and had Mom take a pic of me on the other side of the 2-person stock…now have the old photo and the newer one together, so it looks like Dad and I are locked up together at the same time, even though probably 25 years had passed between the two.๐ Should mention also that my grandfather (Mom's dad) was a builder, and he designed his house (which I now live in) with many elements from Colonial Williamsburg. He was a history buff, and Williamsburg was just being cobbled together at the time he enlarged this house. Imagine my surprise when I saw my living room fireplace in the Governor's Mansion!
