How can I tell if my tomato plant is indeterminate or determinate? The plant was grown from a store bought tomato so I’m not sure.

What kind of store bought tomato?

There’s no way to tell for sure, but I would bet on determinate. I read somewhere commercial growers prefer determinates as the fruits will be ready at the same time, simplifying harvest.

You just know by the strain. If you’re guessing after planting, if it stops growing, you know. If it keeps going to over like 8+ feet, you know. Yours looks determinant, but it could also be small from any number of variables.

I’ve never really done the whole throw a store tomato in the ground and grow it thing, but I know people that do, and their cherry and grape tomatoes seem indeterminate; they produce a lot of fruit for a long time. What other commenter said about growers wanting determinate, that’s probably for large tomatoes.

Determinate means each stem ends with an inflorescence whereas indeterminates infloresce on the side of the stems
