If you put the coals on one half and the meat on the other half you can do high indirect grilling which I wouldn’t call smoking but similar results without the smoke ring. It’s a lot quicker process, good for smoking sausages and smaller cuts. I could grill up two steaks on one of these things real good back in the day.

Yeah I never noticed how misleading that name is.
The Weber real smoker is called the Smokey Mountain.
As a side not I wonder where the “Joe” comes from? Lots of grills and company have Joe in the name. What is the deal with that.
BOHIFOBRE
Sure you can. It’s just a mini kettle, so it can do everything a kettle can, just a bit smaller. Just watch your temps and you’ll be fine.

Use some wet wood chips on the charcoal side for smoke.

I’ve smoked lamb chops, pork loin, chicken thighs, and planked salmon on a lil guy like this. Just keep the heat to one side. Apartment living 😅

It’s not ideal, but yes, sure. You’ll want to be careful with cooking temps so a thermometer will help massively. Soak the wood chips so they don’t all go up at once thanks to proximity to hot coals and I’ve found the best method for a long slow Heat source is a c shape of coals around the edge of the grill on one side (with the wood chips mixed in)…and then light one end of it. Basically acts like a candle and burns around the kettle. On a kettle this size you may need to move the item you’re cooking if it’s medium to large size

The meat will always be too close to the heat source to really get a low and slow cook going but you can still make some really good food. I’d use a pan of water to act as a heat sink

If you think that you can smoke on a Smokey Joe, I want whatever you’re smoking! /s

My first smoker was a “mini-wsm” which is just sandwiching a tamale pot between the base and the lid of a Smokey Joe. Works great.
Think it’d be harder to do a true low and low with just a Smokey Joe. The meat is too close to the coals so you’d get a lot of radiant heat.

It will work if you can keep the heat indirect.
I cook tritip in the wbber “go anywhere” and it’s just a little lunchbox sized grill.

Maybe Joe was smoking out everyday by the factory next to his place when serving out his cocktails😂😂😂

To be fair they named this thing way before smoking became mainstream.

You can smoke on it but, just make sure it’s completely out before you do….

You can and it would be worth trying.
I have an SNS Travel Kettle that’s about the same size. Has a couple features that encourage smoking: a smoke hole and a temp probe hole. I have yet to smoke with it. But will this summer.
I suspect it doesn’t take too long to get these smaller kettles to temp. I also wonder if adjustments we make to top or bottom vents would be more quickly seen in grate temp.

My Smokey Joe holds 200F really well with coals off to one side and the temp probe on the opposite. I have the model with side vents and keep both open just a little bit. You can definitely add some wood to get some Smokey flavor, but you only have half the grill space with the is method

Yes I have done “smoked ribs” on it many times while camping. Just a little bit of charcoal on one side with a piece of whatever smoking wood chuck you like and that’s it just turn the meat after an hour since the side close to the heat will cook quicker.
