Guy Fieri Eats a Gigantic Meatball Sub in Alaska | Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives | Food Network
so I’m here in Fairbanks Alaska with the one and only Benny Lynn from pagota restaurant I want to take you to this place Mo she used to work for me oh so we’re going to a Chinese restaurant no her friend they partner together and open this place she also worked at the hospital before so it’s a Chinese place by the hospital no no no no no no no and those two they love Tequilas they wait wait wait so it’s a Chinese restaurant by the hospital that serves Tequila No no no no they have a place called salty on the second this is salty on second I’m so confused crab stuff mushrooms ready to go salties is a great hot spot here in Fair Banks we got a biscuit and gravy up my favorite time to come here is for breakfast but I definitely love their lunch and dinner as well but things actually began with brunch when owners Vanessa Stans and Monica Kissinger set out to pair scratch made food with boozy drinks so Betty says this is a great place to come says you girls like tequila that’s how we got the name salties we both have worked in the bar business for close to 20 years just started with us wanting to do something on our own everyone in town knows Monica and Vanessa I knew that they’d do a great job meatball subs in the oven the meatball sub it’s really really really good their marinara sauce is just absolutely amazing the bread it’s always soft you definitely need two hands to pick it up and they are huge all right CH what’s game plan we’re going to make our homemade bread for the meatball sub you don’t bake bread I cook rice we’re going to put the Power flour into the bowl don’t let it fall on the floor Benny wheat flour granulated garlic interesting sugar salt yeast where did you get this recipe from from my grandma we just mix it around and then I’m going to start putting the water in let this go got pulls from the bowl yep now we add oil and mix it a little more leave it in the bowl for about 45 minutes and then it rests on the table for about another 45 minutes then we’ll portion it and put it in our fridge this is after it’s been sitting overnight go ahead Benny gentle huh gentle and then just roll it oh okay yeah cornmeal and on the tray once they’re proofed into the oven 20 minutes next me balls we got our ground pork 8020 ground beef housemade bread that we soak in milk onion parsley parmesan cheese a lot of it wow eggs granulated garlic fennel pepper and salt Benny go get your gloves you got to make meall all right all right B it up does like that yep and it goes in our oven 20 minutes you make your own tomato sauce too yes everything I should just quit asking if they make it we’re going to start with the oil fresh garlic onion pepper oregano salt sugar let that caramelize a little bit crushed tomatoes how long we going to let this cook 4 hours build a sandwich yep we take our housemade bun add a little bit of provolone cheese meatballs marinara mozzarella and then it goes in the oven just to melt the cheese yes now watch this Benny I show you how to do this I’m ready you ready wow Monica usually calls me mooy mooy in Chinese is sister I got to tell you something that bread with that little garlic kick that’s Dynamite meatballs are tender got great texture sauce is delicious this really nice tomato it’s legit I mean I could easily be in an East Coast sub shop getting this good job thank can I was a t to go sure please well done the meatballs are spiced perfectly nice zesty marinara sauce it’s killer it is killer Trudy pizza for Liz salties is definitely my favorite place to come in Fairbank I’m happy to bring my kids here with us but then when we want to have an adult time in the evenings it’s a great place to C they turn this place into a club Vanessa’s husband actually is the DJ it gets going all right when you enter in here it’s always very warm and inviting and the food is very hearty and homey I have your chicken pot pie the gravy in the chicken pot pie is my favorite I actually think the amount of crust to the rest of the dish is fantastic chicken pop py we start with our chicken season it up with a little bit of oil stuff it with some butter garlic crushed red peppers Rosemary salt and pepper little thyme okay in the oven 3504 hour and 15 minutes all right so we pulled the chicken we’re going to make our stock water bones and scraps from the chicken that we cooked off got it scraps from the kitchen bay leaf carrots cabbage onions garlic celery let this simmer down now 4 hours 5 hours 7 hours over achiever now we’re going to make our filling chicken stock carrots sour onion house spice mix add the chicken once this comes to a boil thicken it up with our slurry and then drop in your potatoes that’ll cool it down next we’re going to make the crust for on top start with our lard looks like we’re getting to make biscuits kind of yeah mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy flour salt ice water she wants to shortening cold so the shortening will stay separated inside of the flour so when she bakes it it creates layers oh roll it out cut it into circles put it in the oven then we got our pot pie filling wow pull it out and it’s ready to go on top of the chicken pot pie crumbly crusty my my the one thing that really says something as a pie when you have pie crust when you bust into this and you let that soak up all that filling it takes you right back to a log cabin hanging out with Grandma when you say that you’re going to put a pop pie on a menu better taste like now definitely deconstructed chicken pop pie all that I’ve had this sits at the top of the menu chicken pop pie up the gravy has fantastic flavor to it the crust it’s so crispy just legit it’s perfect we have your loaded avocado toast I am a salties fan that’s like my second home it’s like you own Vanessa got together and said let’s make the kind of food we like for all of our friends let’s have a really good time proud of you guys thanks everybody by the way when you come in ask for moo mo mo

My favorite sub ever. It's better than a steakncheese, but I can't find a really good meatball grinder, only at subway w8th pepperoni on it. 🤤

I've been there. The food was ok
Spam. I love making meatballs. I love meatball recipes. I like people who make meatballs. I am not the yelper who is associated with making meatballs, and I would not want to steal or unintentionally mishandle her persona. If I have one meatball making tip to share, it would be to not overwork the meatball during preparation. I also learned something new in this meatball video.

If you went to Alaska and didn't try Burrito Heaven on Boniface and get the Devil Dog Burrito you wasted your trip. Also Burger Jim's, Arctic Roadrunner, and this little pizza place on debarr and beaver Rd
