Got a grill off of someone for free and didn’t think to ask what the metal plates under the grates are…
Any ideas?

So your food doesn’t fall through

That’s for the infrared grilling. It’s nothing to do with food falling through.
Search for a manual for this model, or similar, and it will tell you.

They will help prevent flair up as well.

We don’t get a grill “off of” a person but “from” a person.
Does no one remember the word “on” anymore? This is just as crazy as “based off of a book” instead of “based on a book.”

I have that grill. Those are the actual grates that came with it. Whatever’s on top of that was added on after the purchase. It’s an infrared grill in those grates work fantastic.

Those grates suck. Just remove them. I own 1 of these. All they do is get clogged with debris and you basically cook on a flat top at that point
